If the system (or a body in the system) hasn't previously been discovered, you'll need to use the Full Spectrum Scanner (FSS) to map the system before you can see the planets in the sysmap. The FSS will also show you if a planet has bio signals on it.
Once you've found a planet with bio signals, head over to it, use your Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS) to map the planet. This will give you a blue/green overlay on the planet which shows you where each species might spawn.
