Strong Signal Source way out here??
Ok, I'm new. I've only been playing a short time, mostly trade missions and such with no real dedication. Until this last week.

I just spent the last week on my first exploring mission. I was scanning every star and every planet in every system I FSD in to and it was a lot. I had gone about 1,500 Ly out, past the California Nebula and was in the process of making my way to the Orion area when I had stopped to scan some gas planets in the middle of nowhere. Exact name of that nowhere was SYNUEFAI PZ-Z B4-0 1. As I was flying between icy planets orbiting around this gas planet way out from the star, I ran smack into a strong signal source.

Now, I've seen these around in my trade missions but didn't know how to scan them to see what they were. So with this one, I inched up really slow to it and then it said Safe Disengage Ready. I was like, hmmm...maybe I'll hear/see something cool since I'm so crazy stupid far out from civilization. I drop in and as soon as I do, I see some text saying something about Boiling Me or something like that. I look down at my ship shield area and my ship is being attacked and I was blown up in a matter of 2-3 seconds. It was horribly fast. Embarassingly fast. I didn't even get a chance to see who or what it was that had attacked me or why. :steamfacepalm:

400 billion stars, I'm ~1,500 Ly from Kremann and I find something in the middle of nowhere that wanted me dead. Not cool. Especially losing all that scan data.

So now my question is, are there signals like that just randomly all over the galaxy cuz up until that point, I hadn't seen a single one outside of civilization. If not, why would it be there and could it have been an alien race or some other undiscovered npc? I'm upset, confused and curious all at the same time. I hope someone has some answers to help me cope.

THe "signal sources" are sites that pop up randomly, everywhere. They come in three flavours, "strong", "weak" and "unidientified". "Strong" is a situation which contains lots of ships, often pirate ships. For example, there's the "gold bait" SSS, where you warp in and find a bunch of gold floating about; if you approach, three pirate Anacondas appear out of nowhere and start blowing you up.

I doubt aliens would use English while attacking you; you'd either get nothing, or something like "[untranslatable]". You've probably found a perfectly normal SSS, just like you'd find in inhabited space. Such things aren't impossible to find in remote locations, just very, very improbable. I'm afraid I haven't been out deep-exploring enough to know if it's something that is commonly encountered; all I've read about on the forums before is people encountering a USS, which usually turns out to be either a wrecked ship or simply empty.

FInally, when you died, you'd have seen a "death screen" before the insurance screen popped up: "You have been killed by..." and naming either the NPC or CMDR that was credited with your kill. Do you remember what that said? If it said a human name (like Donald Trump, or Tricia McMillan, or whatever) then you know it wasn't aliens.

Its unusual to see one so far out. They usually stop appearing about 500 LY from the edges of inhabited space.

With 1.4 we are meant to be getting new things to find in remote space, but as far as i know, they are not there yet.

You should check it out... just be prepared to run.

Hmmm maybe I should go back and arm up my sporing ship eh? but traveling 8000 LY is a PITA...

you doubt that aliens would use "English" language ? SURE they Would !! cuz its most alien and alienating language in planet Earth !!
but talking seriously - they intelligent enough species and well-equipped for that(translation/communication)too.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still not sure what is there, but it didn't give me a chance to even try and run. It was literally 2-3 seconds from drop in to dead. I looked at my text box, down to my ship, throttle up and boom, black screen of death. It was that fast. The name that showed up on the death screen was Mellor.

I was thinking about going back out there but I don't have my ASP rigged with any weapons and I don't know if I would enjoy another insta-death.

such overhelming density and rapidness of such - quite unusual. unless you bypass thru pirate hub, by mistake. maybe some appropriate tweaks will come, if FD devs fond something unusual about.
as for chat style offensive/slang chatting before attack - is usual style of pirate NPC's :) they usually tend to offer you to drop cargo 1st, usually. but sometimes don't. depend on few factors, including their combat rating and you ship setup, maybe.

Right, its strange, like I said, signal sources don't usually appear that far out.

More details would be good though.

Let me get this straight.

You found a signal source.
Dropped in.
There was a ship that attacked you and killed you in 2-3 seconds? No scan, no NPC chatter? No, "I'm going to boil you up"?
It was an NPC ship - Mellor, not CMDR Mellor.
You were definitely more than 500 LY from the edge of civilization?

(Yes)

Dropped in.
(Yes)

There was a ship that attacked you and killed you in 2-3 seconds? No scan, no NPC chatter? No, "I'm going to boil you up"?
(No scan at all, there was text the same time he started shooting at me but all I was able to read before looking down and seeing my ship in the red was "boil". I never even had time to see them. I thought I would be able to go back and see the chat log after getting back into my new ship, but it was blank.)

It was an NPC ship - Mellor, not CMDR Mellor.
(I had written it down and it only said Mellor.)

You were definitely more than 500 LY from the edge of civilization?
(Pretty sure. After I died I tried to figure out how far out I was. Luckily I had written down the star name before dropping in and it was something like ~1,100 - 1,500 Ly from Kremainn. When I go back in game I can double check, but based on that, I would have to say yes.)

Good dose of Paranoia is what keeps you alive and healthy, specially in this game. Always expect that everything wants to kill you. And never go exploring without having at least Military Grade Bulkheads installed on your ship, it might make the difference between getting away in time or getting blown to bits in moments.

May be you had mission unfinished?
Often missions spawn hunters for you. And they can get you anywhere..

or you abandon/defect powers". which as you can knew may "hunt" you by you former associates or/and mercs. especially violence-based powers, but not only, seems.

Nope, no missions. I've only been doing easy trade missions, and yes I lost A LOT of scan data money. Many several million. I had been scanning every system I entered for a week straight and in that week had logged about 50-60 hours of play time.

I'm in game now and it is 889 Ly from the edge of civilization (ARIETIS SECTOR CG-X C1-12 to SYNUEFAI PZ-Z B4-0).
Zi 2015 年 9 月 6 日 上午 1:28
Then probably defected ;)
