I doubt aliens would use English while attacking you; you'd either get nothing, or something like "[untranslatable]". You've probably found a perfectly normal SSS, just like you'd find in inhabited space. Such things aren't impossible to find in remote locations, just very, very improbable. I'm afraid I haven't been out deep-exploring enough to know if it's something that is commonly encountered; all I've read about on the forums before is people encountering a USS, which usually turns out to be either a wrecked ship or simply empty.
FInally, when you died, you'd have seen a "death screen" before the insurance screen popped up: "You have been killed by..." and naming either the NPC or CMDR that was credited with your kill. Do you remember what that said? If it said a human name (like Donald Trump, or Tricia McMillan, or whatever) then you know it wasn't aliens.
With 1.4 we are meant to be getting new things to find in remote space, but as far as i know, they are not there yet.
You should check it out... just be prepared to run.
Hmmm maybe I should go back and arm up my sporing ship eh? but traveling 8000 LY is a PITA...
but talking seriously - they intelligent enough species and well-equipped for that(translation/communication)too.
I was thinking about going back out there but I don't have my ASP rigged with any weapons and I don't know if I would enjoy another insta-death.
as for chat style offensive/slang chatting before attack - is usual style of pirate NPC's :) they usually tend to offer you to drop cargo 1st, usually. but sometimes don't. depend on few factors, including their combat rating and you ship setup, maybe.
Right, its strange, like I said, signal sources don't usually appear that far out.
More details would be good though.
Let me get this straight.
You found a signal source.
Dropped in.
There was a ship that attacked you and killed you in 2-3 seconds? No scan, no NPC chatter? No, "I'm going to boil you up"?
It was an NPC ship - Mellor, not CMDR Mellor.
You were definitely more than 500 LY from the edge of civilization?
(Yes)
Dropped in.
(Yes)

(No scan at all, there was text the same time he started shooting at me but all I was able to read before looking down and seeing my ship in the red was "boil". I never even had time to see them. I thought I would be able to go back and see the chat log after getting back into my new ship, but it was blank.)

(I had written it down and it only said Mellor.)
You were definitely more than 500 LY from the edge of civilization?
(Pretty sure. After I died I tried to figure out how far out I was. Luckily I had written down the star name before dropping in and it was something like ~1,100 - 1,500 Ly from Kremainn. When I go back in game I can double check, but based on that, I would have to say yes.)
Often missions spawn hunters for you. And they can get you anywhere..
I'm in game now and it is 889 Ly from the edge of civilization (ARIETIS SECTOR CG-X C1-12 to SYNUEFAI PZ-Z B4-0).
