Do we have to be in the same star system you mean?
note: you do have to add your friend to your list before they can be seen outside your current system.
in private, you have to invite your friend to join your group., then you must both start the game in the same group and you will be able to see your friend in the comms panel once you are both logged in.
if the group selection after the start button is clicked is missing, close the launcher and game then reopen. the private group sometimes dissappears after accessing the friends/group section, its a minor bug which should be fixed with the next update in acouple weeks :)

when someone with over 5 times the hours in a game corrects you, might want to research it before replying
We join the Private Server, but it keeps saying the other is in Solo when we clearly never clicked Solo.
Lol Whut? What's your specs? Runs flawlessly for me on pretty much max settings...

Have i5 - 255k 8 gb ddr3 and a GTX 560. Auto put it in high. very rarely drops below 55fps mos tlag i get is down to conenctions in open. zilth performance problems in solo.
FYI E:D seems to behave wierd from time to time if both the steam overlay and overwolf are on at teh same time.
