You can join a Powerplay faction using the Powerplay button, I think in your right-hand holopanel.
EDIT: sorry that should read *LEFT* holopanel.
Powerplay added 12 npc faction leaders who you can pledge to and do missions for.

powerplay - is similar but different thing.
its like different party in different country.
while different faction(ie "federation", "empire", "alliance" or "independent") is something like couintry/government.
its oversimplified version ;) 'star politics in nutshells' :=)
One person's "grinding" is another person's enjoyable gameplay.
- Factions in the Galaxy/Game World -
There are thousands of factions in the Galaxy but 3 major factions:
Federation, Empire and Alliance.
You can gain reputation and ranks for multiple major factions in the same time.
You just do missions for them until you are friendly or allied.
If you join a combat zone you can switch to the faction you like in your function menu.
A serious faction war and commitment does not exist for players given by game content. The purpose of faction ranks will give you higher income, more credits and access to restricted systems.
* players you encounter online wont also give away any information about what faction they belong.
* Therefore a deeper faction conflict between players in the game world does not exist.
* No player guilds exist and the option to create such.
- Factions in Powerplay -
Powerplay is a sperated gameplay, an instanced "battleground" with a mix of grind against AI ships, delivery missions and pvp. Around 10 different factions exist here with different types of bonuses, here you can choose and join a single faction and you fight against other faction members, AI ships and players.
Faction ranking in Powerplay is a huge grind, especially with the weekly 50% merrit decay.
Players main motivation and result to gain rank is actually just a 15% credit discount for expensive ships.
Yes, actually, this can happen. Like in Lugh.
It has happened to me, when I get turned away from stations because of my activities, so I suddenly can't land in a system. Unless I have misunderstood what you are saying.
I mean a faction war where players actually play a role and choose a side, with combat for territory and pvp against enemy faction members.
Seriously pledge to some Empire power or Archon Delaine and fly down to the Pegasi Sector.. Operation Davy Jones is as hostile a player encounter as you can get right now.. ^_^
Yep, this can and does happen.
Example. Player A supports local faction X. Player B supports local faction Y. As influences change, a civil war in the system might break out (or a faction might expand to another adjacent system). When a war state happens, PVP in conflict zones is most definitely pvp against other human faction members.
The faction system is actually pretty in-depth; I'm continually surprised by things it throws at me. My local station turning red and saying to me "You are not welcome here, enemy!" even though I was 100% legal and had no bounties on me, was a real eye opener for me. The reason for it was, the faction that owned the station was a mafia-type faction and I had been mostly killing all their pirate buddies in the local RES.
The best bet is to then fly to their home system and talk to some of the commanders that mill around there, talk to them, make friends and do faction jollies with the friends you make.
Good luck.
