So umm, about the Type 8
I tripped over some Alexanderite and sold it for a ricoculous price, so i decided to retire my new AspX from mining duties, and try an even more new dedicated mining ship. The Type 8 seemed like the perfect ship.
Anything better is much more expensive, or has caveats and asterisks.

And this is it. Same outfitting as the AspX only with more cargo racks and not even a DSS to distract from the main task.

(i might fiddle with some modules, swapping Ds and As)

So umm... the thing is fat and heavy, and big. But surprisingly nimble. With drek 5E thrusters it's ponderous, but stick 5As and it's shockingly nimble.
Not just nimble for it's size. Nimble period.
Lakon (Fdev) did some magic with it.

The other thing is the SCO. What a wonderful thing! Just took a test drive to Judson station in Mizar, near Alioth. A nice 157K ls away from the main star.
It took a few minutes but it felt comfortable, stable. Fast. It didn't even use much fuel at all.
The SCO drive is amazing. The Python MkII must be a dream to fly because the Type 8 is super smooth.

What else?
Decals and painjobs are all ARX locked. There's almost nothing to apply that can be unlocked normally, not even name tags and ID.
There's also not that much to choose from, and what is there is kinda meh.

I think it's an amazing mining ship, and a decent explorer. It can almost hit 30ly, and has the SCO for those annoying distant planets. Plus it can fit as many souveniers as you want, not to mention AFMUs and thick shields.

I expected to like it, but it exceeded expectations.
What a fun thing to fly.

If you're feeling brave, you can drop the shield in favor of another 32t rack, bringing the total cargo capacity to 352t.
That is almost Anaconda or Type 10 territory. For 11 or so million it costs to outfit the Type 8.

I love the T8 for core/subsurface/abrasion mining. Zip around the asteroid with the lateral thrusters, blowing rocks to rubble.
I plan on getting a T8 for my rare mining trips. Mainly because it looks cook. Fdev really nailed that one.

The type 8 was all I flew from the day they made it available for ARX it was my main ship for everything.....Till I got the mandallay, a lot less cargo but man it's so nice to fly it's ridiculous, makes the type 8 look like a snail

Having a great time with the ship. Pushing rocks aside, bullying asteroids. It's awesome.

NOT awesome how quickly i go through sub-surface missiles :((
Why can i not carry spare ammo?
*sigh*

I'll have to park the Type 8 and go back to adventuring, slaying dragons, and looking under cobbles for damn materials.
It's fun cracking cores, but i don't need the money right now.

I'm tempted to swap some cargo racks for X equipment, but the Type 8 cannot really fight and i feel like pew pewing NPCs from time to time whist exploring.

Type 8 would be a phenomenal support ship. It can fire rockets until time ends. It can also sorta defend itself with turrets or a fighter.
Pefect partner for a smaller, nimbler ship that can get up someone's exhaust and peel their shields off.
In theory anyway.

You can synthesise it though? or does that not apply to mining tools?

It's possible to sythesize all munitions, including mining charges/missiles.

I don't have the materials though :(*

Aside from rare events, aren't all decals & paintjobs for all ships ARX only? Name plates and IDs are also ARX only.

Many but not all. There are a few free paintjobs, some decals are free, tags usually. Elite rank decals are free, they unlock as you earn ranks. I think Fed/Imp also unlock the same way.

Most annoying are ones that are part of a pack that costs 16,000 or so. Thanks, i just wanted one decal not a whole bunch...

That said, some paintjobs are very cheap. 1000 or 1600 ARX for example.

edit - The Type 8 does not have many paintjobs at all. Unfortunately.
Something to consider, maybe.

you may want to have a DSS for the rings. Lets say you go to a ring, map it in one ship( your aspx) and find your hotspots, but come back to mine in the type 8 with no DSS you wont see the hot spots.

Yep.

This happened. I didn't expect it.

Thanks for the tip.

Combining the Collector and Prospector controlers into one Mining Multi limpet controller frees up space for a DSS. Always handy to have one.

Yes, stopping for bio signs in one thing, but no need to miss a good earth like/ water or terraformable HMC while out and about. come back for the bios.
