Elite Dangerous

T8 vs. T9
That's it I'm done with the T9, its been a pain from day one.

It took years before we got a real fun medium hauler (the T8), and even though it can only carry about half the tonnage of a T9 it doesn't really matter. Costs/benefits wise I will do twice the runs from now on but have double the fun. What's not to like?!

Yep, it will take many days, maybe weeks for me to complete my next Coriolis station but it won't be a pain anymore.

My only question is:
Dare I swap the 5A Shield Generator to a 5E cargo rack?
It would gimme 384t all in all but its not a hull tank, so ... indecisive here

Swap for a cargo rack, put a heavy duty mod on the lightweight plating, and throw in dirty drag drives (boost speed greater than 500 m/s).

You won't need the shield generator when you can move faster than every pirate. You'll also have around 1100 hull, which is enough to get away from pirates when you're boosting and while doing silent running. Just throw in a couple heat sink launchers and you'll be set.

For either, I fly shieldless (in PG or solo) unless I'm getting commodities from an opposition stronghold system (where they take random pot shots at you).

Edit: Also, unless you need the Guardian Booster to cut your jump times, what else do you have on there that's taking up space? My T8 has an even 400 capacity when I go bare metal & racks with it.

It is more efficient, just be aware, a lot of the really productive systems have been made into strongholds, and npcs love to snipe you going into the station. I've been surprised a couple of times when not paying attention.

Roger that, I've felt their love a few times this week.
Silent running and a fast manual docking might fix that

I have a size 4D shield in my T-8. Besides being shot at, I also bump into stuff quite a bit so I almost never run no shields.

You can go as small as a size 3 shield, but there's no size 3 slot. So what the heck use a size 4.

I sold my Type-9 after making only a couple of runs in the Type-8.

Good deal selling that pile of scrap  Congrats

I've just done a stack of a dozen or so combat missions to relieve the monotony, aaaand i am done shootin' and ready for some monotony.

I am in the minority but i enjoy the T9. It is damn fast in the right circumstances.

I do have a T8 but i haven't used it much. Only when collecting a bunch of commodities needed in small quantities.

Type 9 is steady and unhurried. All this talk of how slow it is to get to the pad and boost away from stations is overblown. It is a little slow to depart stations, but i spend that time targetting the destination so it's not a problem.
Landing on pads manually is a cakewalk after you've done it enough times.

Watch your fuel use when using SCO and pop heatsinks and you'll be flying. Erratically but you'll be flying. :D

The only annoyance is trying to keep it on 6s to destination when passing through gravity wells. It is very sensitive and tends to lose time or overshoot.

I don't even do it for the extra cargo, i really enjoy it.
It's an 18 wheeler hauling 18 18 wheelers. No point rushing it.

That's how i do it. Clean 400. Nothing much to lose, no scan data or exobio. Can always recover and haul the stuff again.

I only crash in nimble & fast ships (I am Competent at pancaking Cobras and Chiefs into the dirt, i've done it so many times...). Never damaged a Type 8 or 9.

With regards to station building I use the T9 for the big loads and then switch to the T8 to do the fiddly bits.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with that either

To me its not the docking/departing, its the overshooting in super cruise when I approach a planet or station with SC assist on, which is entirely from my end bc I use the SCO boost even if a station is just 14Ls away from the main star :steambored:

That whale is just too fat and sluggish when it comes to twisting and turning (yaw, roll etc), also when we arrive in a system and need to flip the boat 180° :steambored: :steambored:

Apreciate the slowness. I felt the same way at first, and i rejected teh T9 in favor of the T8.

But then i came back to haul the big loads, and never looked back. I've learned not to twist and turn too much. I've learned how to approach the station letterbox.
Yes it is more involved than in any other ship other than other whales but for me at least, it is not annoying.

Overshooting IS annoying, that's true. I don't use SC assist and still i sometimes daydream and fail to realize i'm approaching too fast.
Or it's just plain sensitive and 6s becomes 5s just for a blink of an eye, so then i have to spend an eternitiy pointing away from the destination to bleed off some speed and return back on track.

Most of the time, it hauls reliably, dependably, responsibly and a bunch of other words ending in "bly".

It can even land in ♥♥♥♥♥♥ spaces ;)

If i ever engineer it, i'm taking it out exploring. Just for the screenshots.

But hey, i fully respect the hate. I'm fortunate that i enjoy the ship.

Indeed, I would like to appreciate all ships the game offers but I can't do that. Lack of patience I guess, but I'd happily fly the T9 if it was but a little more agile tho

Edit:
Maybe its time for me to buy myself a fleet carrier, just for construction purposes.
I guess I can always sell it again

I’ve done endless end to end tests now. Large load hauling is always faster in the T9. But mine is very well kitted with PRESCO and guardian goodies. I can do a round trip at best 20-25% faster surface or orbital in T8. That’s just not good enough value. I have no probs with T9 handling with the 7A fully engineered thrusters. No shield. Guardian FSD booster.
sounds like a cutter w/o shields (784) you would like

T9 imo works great with carrier parked like 7Mm away :)

Well the engine already runs on maxed out dirty engineering (with drag drives), and on top of that engine focused pwr. distributor and a stripped down armored A4 pwr. plant with two heatsinks (to keep it cooled). Edit: this goes for both ships

Also got hvy duty armor so its not really a mod issue back here. With the T9 its more the agility and handling that I find hard to digest. And its not about top speed either.

Its simply too slow and sluggish to be a joyful hauler:
We all know you need to yaw, turn or even flip 180 from time to time when delivering them goods, and the T9 just fails to complete the task in a satisfying manner - even in the hands of pilots with 5-10 years on their backs. But its a good idea to skip the shields on the T8
