Serious Memory Leak
i've been moritoring my ram when i run and exit the game. there seems to be a serous memory leak of around 900MB to 1GB. this is quite annoying. as i have to restart to clear the leak when ever i quit the game.

Game is still under development...

That definitely something for the official forums or a ticket IMO - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=105

I'm curious how do you track/pin it down that its a "memory leak" is it something you see in the task manager or are you using some other memory monitoring app?

tracking memory leak is easy. boot up clean windows. note how much ram is used. play the game. note ram usage. exit game note ram usage.

e.g window ram usage 600MB, game running 2.3 GB, game quit only windows again 1.2GB ram usage.

that will show there is a 600MB memory leak from the game.

Thanks Alucard Van Hellsing that's really useful and easy to follow info :)

Uhm, Windows will keep stuff in the ram for further use even after closing an application unless it's needed for something else. Not a memory leak, just how memory management works.

A memory leak would cause a constant gain in memory usage while playing until it's full and applications start crashing - which isn't the case even after several hours of playing.

i even had to run a ram clearing program just to be sure windows wasnt storing it for the future. and it still came up with exess that i could not get rid off.

OP - is it actually causing you any problems? Are you noticing any reduction in performance the longer you play? Does it keep eating away until all your RAM is used?

Otherwise it might by just regular windows stuff grabbing memory.

if i repeated playing and quiting, around 5 times windows will run out of ram and go at speeds slower than normal.

Is that your assumption or actual fact?

you have only 4gb?

Memory leak could be occured only during application run. eg you see that ED eats 2gb, then 3gb, then at 3.5gb it's just crash cause 32bit applications could not allocate more than ~3.5gb RAM.

When you quit ED elitedangerous32.exe process is out of task manager. If there is no ED process running and you have "memory leak", then problem obviously not in ED but in your OS or other applications. Application could not eat memory if it's not runniing.
Check your taskman, maybe elitedangerous32.exe process still running after you quit the game?

i'll try running the game for a extended period of time. the most i have done is let the game run for an hour at a time max. i'll let it run overnight and see if there is any memory chew up.

i have 16gb of ram. my nominal is at 7 gb usage. with elite it goes up to 9gb usage.

I don't know, my game runs for an hour now and is currently at 786MB on max settings without AA.
