I'm just having trouble getting the ship to stay still when I leave go of the controls. Perhaps a deadzone needs adjusting?
Use the win10 calibration app native to windows. (type in joy into the search bar)
also, in game increase your deadzone a little, my TM stick wants to climb a bit, but adding a slight deadzone stops it.

Make super-sure that your stick is completely upright and untouched from the moment you plug it in until windows says you're good to go.

I also had once an issue with that one when I bought it from Amazon (was last year), the ship kept moving forward while the thruster was in center position.
Few days ago I bought it again at a local store, no issues at all anymore.
Edit:
What you can try is to so soften/harden the grip, you can change it under the stick.
Thanks very much for your help.
Unrelated, but if you get tired of the default linearity, here is good guide to adjusting it and fixing the bad deadzone on the HOTAS X:

1. I had manually set the joystick resistance very high, so it had trouble completely recentering when untouched.
2. The stick was a bit out of calibration, which can be fixed by letting the stick sit straight and either unplugging it and plugging back in, or by pressing the RESET and MAPPING buttons at the same time.
Hopefully this can help out anyone who finds this thread themselves. :D
Might be late by 3 years but make sure you setup the axes in game. I dont have this game but it usually works that way
