What are the perks of being "allied" with a faction?
Other than they turning green on the HUD, does it actually do anything? I haven't noticed any difference from being neutral, friendly and allied.

Just means you haven't popped into hostile space yet. I've been on my way back from an exploring trip, and have gone through a few hostile areas. Some that I can collect data on. Needless to say, they have been a real pain since they try to interdicte me no less than 3 times while I'm taking my scans.

Sadly I had to give up on the scans in the one system. twice the interdiction went nutz on me during my final scan, and popped me out of cruise with a Python attacking me, and my Adder just can't seem to keep away from it's guns long enough for my FSD to cool down then charge back up :(

Also note that if they don't turn red when they attack you, you'll still get a bounty for shooting them.

If you're talking about local factions, you just get access to better missions, that's it.
Also some nice bonuses,such as:
Different response text from station
Security ships will scan you less often (i am not sure)
You can get all info about allied ship without scanning em

Alright, thanks. Seems like you get allied with all minor factions as well if you are allied to the major power such as the Empire.

Depending on the power your allied with (power play, not local factions), you'll get special hardware not available to other powers, different weapons or shields...

No problem.I've heard some stuff about discounts and access to more equipment, but i haven't tested that myself so i am not sure.

I think I got a bit confused with the terminology. I was talking about being allied to for instance the Empire which I think are called a major faction?

Also if you are allied (or friendly) with a local faction (something like "(Insert system name here) Syndicate/Resistance/Liberal Party/etc") you get better payouts for missions for them, plus you can find more fleet rank up missions (for Federal and Imperial minor factions) which will let you buy Faction-Specific ships (like the Federal Assault Ship and the Imperial Clipper) and access certin systems (like Sol (Where earth is) and Achenar (Where the Imperial Homeworld is)). You also have the Powerplay factions, but since I haven't messed with that, I can't really say much about it.

My bad... Mustn't have been paying attention lol.

Reputation has no impact on Navy Ascension missions. The only thing you'll get is access to missions that need Friendly and Allied reputation.

No, it's not your fault. I initially called it a power in the topic, I changed it to faction.

Your reputation with the MAJOR faction, Federation or Empire, (there are no Alliance ranks at present) does impact the frequency of ranking missions availability, but you can't impact that directly. It's a composite of your reputation with Federation-aligned or Empire-aligned minor factions. So to an extent being friendly or allied with the minor factions does impact naval ranking but only because it improves your rep with the associated major faction.

No, this has not been the case for a while.

Every mission you complete for a Federation or Empire minor (system) faction earns you a certain amount of Faction XP, a statistic that is currently not visible to the player. A progress bar for this (like what we have for Elite ranks now) has been added in the 1.5 update. Once you fill up that XP bar, you will start to see Navy Ascension missions.

Completely PowerPlay stuff to earn merits to get to a higher rating with your chosen major power is how you unlock permits for different system (info on those can be found on the wiki) and for unlocking the faction ships with the major powers. You can find video's on YouTube that explain PowerPlay.

Also the better rating you have with your major power the more they pay you each week. Your rating only changes at the end of each weekly cycle. So say you get the 100 merits needed for rating 2 this week. At the end of this week's cycle you'll get pay for your current rating, and upgrade to rating 2. Half of your merits will carry over to the next cycle (going up a rating doesn't take any). At the end of the next cycle you'll get paid for that rating and as long as you've earned enough merits to keep your current rating you'll stay at that rating for the next cycle. If not then you'll drop a rating and get paid less at the end of the next cycle, and lose half of whatever your current total merits are.

I haven't worked my rating up enough yet to get any system permits or faction ships so I don't know if dropping back down take the permit or not, but logic tells me you'd be able to keep any faction ship you currently own and should be able to regain it still through insurance if lost, just wouldn't be able to buy another one until your rating goes back to that level.

Powerplay is not related to naval progression, you will not gain Federation/Empire rank, ships or permits from it.

Ship access and system permits are permanent once you unlock the appropriate Federation/Empire rank through naval progression. It is not possible to be demoted and lose that access.
