A question about gimballed weapons.
I was watching some Youtube vids, and in one of them the pilot was using gimballed lasers. What I noticed was that he was able to switch from gimballed to fixed mode without unselecting his target. How do I do this?

I know he wasn't using 2 separate fire groups as there were only 2 hardpoints on the ship he was using. I am positive he wasn't unselecting his target as well.

The gimballed weapons lock on if you face the target long enough and look fixed. I haven't upgraded my ship that far yet but the get practise I play the CQC from time to time.

You can toggle a key on your HOTAS if you have enough buttons unbound to switch weapon modes. I am not sure about G i will have to look at it but I know when i run T weapons i can switch their operating mode between F G and T with a flip of a button.

I may have seen it wrong. It was Isonina doing his thing in a Condor during CQC. I couldn't find the exact moment - where I thought I saw it happen - again.

If this is true - and I do believe you, then why is parking your gimbals not a thing? :(

Good tips. I'll have to look into that.

what do you mean: "why is parking your gimbals not a thing?" you use them normal and they find their target within a range... they have different power usage than fixed counterparts and they do less damage than fixed versions... the lock of target when u use them steight is part of the ballancing between the different type of weapons..

I know, but I guess I would like to be able to keep hitting the target when it pops chaff.
I know I'm putting on an "I want my cake and eat it too." question, but don't worry I'm not raging or being negative about the game. I'm ok with dealing with it - no fight here.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing it be that you can 'park' them to fixed mode when needed. I'm not asking for them to have the same specs as full-fixed weapons, just that extra bit of flexibility.

The only way to do what you are asking is to de-target, which of course is not ideal because Fixed weapons adjust convergence if you have a target selected, and it's easier to keep track of a selected target than an unselected one.

Yes, I get that now. Thanks for the tips.

Mix gimbals with fixed. When gimbals are confused, you can still fire your fixed weapons and hit the target. I don't know about CQC, but in normal play using gimbals only is a Bad Idea(tm).

All gimbals is perfectly fine, as long as you don't get into serious pvp. It's better in the long run to practice with fixed weapons and use them where you can though.

That's what I do. The reason I asked is because the great vids of Flight Assist Off combat have me inspired to learn flying like this. I personally don't think I'll be hitting a d*mn thing with fixed weapons. lol

Flyin in FA-on mode, I use fixed beams and gimballed multicannons.
FA-off is going to take gimballed lasers for sure...

Talking of weapons and targeting, is it normal for rockets to select another target if the one they are headed for blows up before they can reach it? Barely made it out alive when my rockets decided that the security ship was the next best thing to hit....
