Quick few questions about powerplay
So, I started playing 2 or 3 days ago so obviously there's a hell of a lot for me to still to learn, I'm just wondering about powerplay.

I know you can get some unique ships/weapons so as I prefer combat over the other bits I'd be interested in joining someone so I can unlock some better stuff. For the record I've currently got a viper set up for combat and exploration, not really tried any other ship yet.

Do you have to pick the faction of the power you work for, or can you support one faction but work with someone from a different faction, and are you allowed to work for multiple ones? Like for example, if you fancied joining the empire or alliance, could you unlock sol by getting some points with the federation too?

Also, are there any awesome weapons/ships to take into consideration before choosing sides?

You pledge allegiance to a Power, other Powers will try and have you killed, and your power will pursue you should you defect for a while (for a day for the lower ranks, don't worry either). You'll also be "wanted" in opposing Power territories as long as you stay pledged to their enemies. They're also mutually exclusive, as you might imagine: once pledged to a Power, you can't work for any other Power.

Ships are obtained through faction rank, which has nothing to do with powerplay level. All you'll get from powerplay are a salary, some modifiers to money income and prices, and that power's signature weapon (or shield) if you get high enough.

So, pledging allegiance to a power doesn't really affect factions then? You're technically able to work with all 3 if you want? :p

You'll be 'wanted' in a number of those systems, but as long as they're not hostile to the Power you've pledged to, yes, you can work for all 3 Factions.

You can get unique weapons from powerplay but not ships, the super faction ships come from a different system involved completing actions that give you rep with either the feds or the imperials.

You can only be in one power at a time, other power members class as enemies but you can still wing up with them

You can pick any power in powerplay and it will not have any impact on your progress with super faction rank/reputation

Honestly if you're still getting into the game, I would stay away from PP. Seems to me it's meant as more of an "end game", so to speak.

You can't contribute much with a tiny ship, and being attacked in every other factions territory -and your own, for that matter (I AM supposed to be here, sir!) - gets pretty old if you're new and still trying to get established. Plus, as stated, the only real rewards are a small amount of cash, and the weapons after you grind your way up.

Stay independent and make your money. Once you've got some big ships and a fat bank account, then it's time for PP.

Just my $.02.

That's only true for delivery missions, for combat your Viper is perfectly viable.

Not my point. The point was, you're better off making money as an independent. You can still participate in CZ's. The only thing you are prevented from doing is hauling supplies for merit, or undermining. Again, there is no real benefit unless you're planning on grinding all the way to the top. In which case, you'd be better off doing that in a bigger ship.

Also, OP stated he wants to work for several factions, which is another reason to stay independent for now.

Ah right thanks guys, so the unlocked weapons aren't really good enough to bother with joining a power? It's nice to know I can do factions separately, I'll have to look up how to start off haha.

Also, what amount of money makes a 'fat bank account'? I've got around 2m currently, I know it's not a massive amount, but I've no clue if it's actually decent or a very small amount.

Anaconda costs around $70 million...... that should give you an idea. What I mean by a "fat bank account" is just enough money to use as a cushion, since you won't be making as much (if anything) when doing PP missions.

It's totally up to you though, that's one of the great things about Elite, if you want to live the life of a "soldier", then by all means, join PP. I just found it really narrowed my focus, and closed off some very lucrative avenues by not being able to easily traverse other factions' territory. When part of a faction, you get interdicted, and shot at all the time.

When do you guys realize this game is not necessarily about making money all the time. If that's all there is to you, what a pity. But stop telling others that's the only thing to do in the game. You don't need a bigger ship to do anything if you actually enjoy what you are doing and don't care how much money it earns you, and if you're not having fun what is the whole point of you playing this game in the first place?

No matter what faction you pledge your alliance to, you'll never have the problem of not getting any missions in any system. You can still work for all kinds of factions while being involved in powerplay. If you like to get into the game deeper than just farming stuff the best thing to do is to find a minor faction to support which also has a player base and also participate in powerplay if you like. If you don't care how the universe evolves, which faction rules which station and whatnot and only care about making money and getting the next bigger ship yeah, you can as well skip that.

However, powerplay is certainly not to be seen as "endgame".

Um, not once did I say you absolutely should not do powerplay. Not sure where all this hostility is coming from, but all I did was give my opinion. Did not know that was frowned upon, but hey, it's the steam forums, what did I expect.

Also, good luck telling any new player it's "not about making money". Don't put words in my mouth - not once did I say it's "the only thing to do in the game", and not once did I say "you'll have problems getting missions". Don't be a ♥♥♥♥, it's totally unnecessary.

If you slowed down a little, before getting all hostile, you might have read this......

I have to say, I tried Powerplay but as an independent miner who's extremely irregular about their playing I couldn't get anything out of it so I never bothered with it again. So it's definitely on a per player basis.
