Save all your pennies by not upgrading your life support to A rated. ypu dont need more than 10 mins of life support...usually!
my first purchase is a new power supply to power the new weapons you *will* want.
Docking Computer is useful as is a fuel scoop.
Have fun shopping!

And as for what missions I do, I've only done the one, which was trading, as was the only one I've been able to find that is either not too far or I have no idea how to do (mining). I think for now, at least, I'll stick to trading/smuggling.
Next, once you have the money I would upgrade your Frame Shift Drive or FSD, from a 2E to a 2D, C, B, or even A. Don't get a size 1, size 2 only. The better the number and the better the letter, the more awesome the module is. A new FSD will allow you to jump much farther on the galaxy map!
I'd also suggest only bumping your life support up to grade D, since that grade weighs the least, and you most likely won't be running into situations where you need a lot of life support time. Especially since the Sidewinder is so cheap to replace.
Mass determines your jump range, you see.
