How do I undermine?
This games stupidly complex with very few answers posted around, and the ones that are contradict each other. Do I have to kill specific faction named craft to undermine or can I just cruise around killing any ship aligned with a foreign power for 30 merits?

Depends on the ethos of the power you have pledged yourself to.

You can only undermine control systems of other powers. If you click on a control system of an opposing power in the galaxy map with "power play" selcted from the "view" tab and then click the icon that looks like a bar graph (on the pop-up when you click on the system) you will be taken to a Power Play screen that tells you the current status of the system (fortify/undermine) and what the particular undermine task for that system would be.

Since I'm pledged to Aisling Duval, I can either interdict and kill ships pledged to any faction that is not part of the Empire within any of that faction's control systems, or I can take loads of Media Blitz Material to an opposing faction's control systems. If I wanted to undermine factions that ARE part of the Empire, I would have to interdict that faction's ships and steal their cargo (special cargo that would have been used to fortify them) within their control systems.

So, the answer to the question varies depending on which Power you are pledged to. But you can almost always earn Power Play for killing ships pledged to an opposing faction, within any of that faction's control systems, at a rate of 30 points per kill and here's how:

Jump to the control system of an opposing faction. Supercruise around and wait for NPC's to spawn-in. Lock onto the NPC's and point your ship at them. After a few seconds you will know if they are affiliated with the Power whos control system you are in. Interdict them. Kill them. Jump back to supercruise befoe the authorities show-up to investigate the murder. Repeat.

You will become wanted in the system you perform these murders in and, eventually, you will become "hostile" to all systems under control of the faction you were attacking. You can still dock at stations you are "hostile" towards.

Thanks for the tips.
People say this is the fastest way of making merits(undermine), but I made more in a militrary zone killing ships. Theres a fast turnover rate of 10 points in the militrary zone, but undermining is slow as hell, but 30 points. Am I doing something wrong? Most craft I find are not pledged to a major faction enemy.

I prefer the military zones too. Less points per kill but it's constant, steady action. Undermining probably suits people who like to break up the killing with a bit of hunting, personally I find it a little frustrating. I think the points per hour is similar.

I find that if there is more than one starport in the enemy control system you choose to undermine in, then there tends to be a larger number of NPC's spawning.

NOTE: Wingmen receive FULL PowerPlay ponts. IE: 1 kill = 30 points per wingman, not split between. (or 10 per if in a military zone)
