the cheap and good option is a diamondback explorer it has the best unengineered jump range if you get a 5a frame shift drive you can then explore everywhere

but should i keep my adder?

Now that you own one, you might as well keep it.
The Adder is quite capable in combat, exploration and trading.
While certain modules are — due to their class — more expensive than the Hauler's (which, considering jump range as the sole criterium, is a preferable alternative), the difference is not all too immense — negligible even.

When I upgraded to a Asp explorer I still kept my adder I dont mind it as a ship or you can use it as a trade in for your diamond back explorer or if you save more say 6.5 mill you could get the asp explorer which is a brilliant exploration ship

Honestly the Adder is not worth keeping except for sentimentality.

If you can buy a DBX for exploration, your go-to multipurpose ship should be the Cobra. Way more capable than the Adder.

Adder is fine, it can carry you to the Keelback (if you want to mine) or Diamondback Explorer (exploring, material gathering, bubble shuttle). Would recommend getting either of those, or you can save up for ASP Explorer which many people use pretty much forever, myself included.

Adder is only good as a joke, never fails to make me laugh when another player interdicts me in one.
If it's a super cheap explorer/taxi you want, Hauler's your boy.

Try the adder one instead

I haven't personally flown the Adder but it is regarded as an entry-level multi-purpose ship for Commanders who haven't really decided what path they want to take. You might not want to save up for the Cobra Mk. III before trying a little exploring, trading or introductory mining.

Once you know what you want to do in the game, I would say that it isn't worth keeping as by then you would be already building up the funds for something more worthwhile.

On a pure numbers/convenience level: Dump it. It's adequate for everything you can do in the game, but it's not really good in anything either.

However the Adder has a certain charme to it that's hard to put in words. It feels a bit rugged, the thrusters sound like they'd be breaking down any moment, the cockpit interior is faded,... Overall, it has this "this is my old truck, I've been driving it for 30 years and will keep driving it for another 30" feel.

I'm currently on a trip to the Trifid of the North in an Adder. Not that I wouldn't have much better options, but I just enjoy flying that ship. I had to remove all weapons, and severely reduce shields and armor, but yeah, it's now at about 30 light years jump range, what is enough to nearly get there, and 1 or 2 FSD injections will do for the rest.
(And yes, I am worried about getting ganked when returning to the Bubble - to the point where I'm even considering not doing the return trip in Open.)

That said, there's one big downside of the Adder, which I only started to notice while being on the exploration trip: It has a relatively small front window. If you want a free view of the system you are exploring, you might want to use a ship with a bigger canopy.

First point:
Exploration isn't tied to jump range. There is a lot of systems you can reach and explore with less than 40ly of jump range.

Second point:
Do you like that ship? Do you like how it appears in your screenshots? If yes: Use it for exploration.

On the other hand:
Did you think exploration is going to Sagittarius/Beagle/Colonia as fast as you can?
Then, there are a lot of ships that can do it better.

It's your game. It's your choice.
