Multiple accounts
TL;DR how does having multiple accounts work from Steam?

I'm still pretty new to the game. My main interest is exploration and particularly the exobiology fun, so for now I'm largely playing in Solo and trying to avoid combat, including keeping my combat rank down to limit the NPCs attacking me to low threat.

However I do want to improve my combat skills a bit so that I can do more than run away or be a sitting duck. It seems to me that there's a limit on how much I can progress my combat skills using the tutorials, so I thought maybe having a second account might help, so.I can practice combat without raising my combat rank in my "real" account.

if I get a second account does that effectively mean I have to buy the game twice or can I use multiple accounts in the same purchase of the game?

And how does having multiple ED accounts work with having a single Steam account?

You have to have multiple copies of the game. If you are using the same steam account, you will have to delink and link the account to steam as needed.

I have 6 Steam accounts and 6 copies of ED + Odyssey.

You just click the Steam menu in the client, then 'Change Account...'

When you start steam, you have the option of displaying all your steam accounts. Pick one, and that's the commander it will use when you run Elite.

No need to log in and out of the launcher.

If you need any more info just ask. I do it multiple times a day.

(ED settings like keybinds etc are shared across all accounts)

Just make sure you link the right steam account to the right Frontier account. (I use one email for each frontier + steam login, and keep a chart on the wall with them all - excluding passwords of course.)

Another tip: if you use Firefox and install Container Tabs, you can have different tabs with their own cookies etc. So you can have an Inara login for each commander, all in the same browser but in different tabs.
