When you run the launcher you should see 'Sign in With Steam' in a big button.
If you see a Log in to your account instead, you need to (re)connect your steam account to a frontier account. (Or if you've played just fine recently, restart the steam client.)
Have logged in via the Steam button when starting the launcher. Then clicked on the large Play button in the launcher, and the game begins to prepare shaders and planets, but right afterwards I get the above error message. Have restarted Steam, but no luck.
Top left of the launcher window, does it show 'Connected As' with your name?
Bottom left, does it show Server Status: Good in white text?
I have also tried to login directly via my email, and then provided a pass code sent to my email, but again it happens that I get kicked after the game prepares shaders and planets. It fails to communicate with the authentication server.
Is this after you've clicked Continue in the game?
If so, before you do that go into Options then Networking and check which network adaptor it's trying to use.
You can also look in steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-odyssey-64\Logs
Very early in the latest file it might show error messages.
Another thing to check is AV software which blocks internet traffic, or the windows firewall itself.
I would sign into your Frontier account. If you can't do that, try password recovery on their site so it emails you to whichever account you used.
Once you log in there, unlink and relink your steam account.
There must be some kind of link already if the launcher shows your name top left though.
-you need to contact support in order to do that however.
First pinned post on the "Bugs & Issues" subforum here.
Your frontier name and commander name are separate.
As PW points out above, you can get them to do it as one off.
On the other hand, if you're willing (or even wanting) to start from scratch if you reset your save you can choose a new name I think...
