I've just returned to Colonia after earning some carrier upkeep in the bubble. The sky is amazing, and it's only 2-3 jumps from civilisation to find completely unexplored systems.
I used to base my carrier 5k ly east of the galactic centre, but now I leave it in Colonia and just head out in a random direction to explore.
A Mandalay with a 70 ly range just makes it easier.
Just remember the cardinal rule: Never fly without rebuy.
It's why I advise people hang on to their old ships when they buy a new one. That way if you ever screw up and you don't have the money to cover the insurance cost on your fancy ship, you'll always have something else you can fly until you earn the credits. I guess that's a little less relevant now that there's Apex and ground missions, but it's nice to have options.
