Pulling the plug on future development and expecting all of your players to buy a whole new game and start from scratch while Frontier rebuilds everything they've worked on for years to get into Elite:Dangerous... that would be a far bigger gamble than just updating E:D's graphics again in a few years.
I'd prefer they keep working on this one, as they have been doing...
The graphics engine is already a lot newer than the one we had at launch (unless you're still playing Legacy).
The graphics in ED are fine, it's the gameplay I'm interested in.
It could take eight to ten years to start from scratch and get it to where it is now, and during that entire time they wouldn't work on this edition. Sounds like another space game which appears to be in a perpetual alpha.
I don't know what to answer you, when I played the aliens hadn't been added yet, so I don't know which version it is
The aliens were added as part of Horizons years ago. This was back when they were using the old (Legacy) pipeline.
The new rendering tech is part of Horizons Live/Odyssey.
By default, Steam installs the Live version of the game these days, so you'll already have the new rendering tech.
these days? so does that mean the new graphics render is coming to Steam too? And by what date exactly?
Legacy is the old 3.8 engine, and Live is the new 4.0 engine.

No. Updated graphics don't define the game. It's the substance/story and content within. They spent a lot of effort to get it what it is today, and developing a newer version for the sake of it not looking dated seems a waste of time and money.
I'd rather them spend the effort to enhance the economy so it's truly player driven, and grow the depth of larger ships and fleet management, so we're not merely stuck in "just me" mode all the time. I'd like the player's point of view to be larger than just a single pilot expected to only play as a single pilot the entire time, and more as business entity.
Plus it would take them years to create ED2, time and money they could spend adding more to the current game.
