How long is your life support?
I normally plump for the 7 minute one as thats usually more than enough to get to a close station.

Fly like a bat out of hell my friend.
I have 25 minutes of air in my FDL, but that's a bit extreme. As OrLoK said, 7 minutes can usually get you anywhere you need to go, especially if you've chozen a RES somewhere in close proximity to a station
Yeah, I like the 25 minutes--sometimes when my canopy gets popped I'm still in the middle of battle and don't want to break off. If you can afford it, you can't have too much air
Don't panic and head to the nearest port and dock!
btw losing credits, being killed, having problems etc etc is part of the game. You have to simply accept the bad with the good. Thats what makes it great.
Ah, ta.
I use the 7 minutes Life Support, is enough time provided you are close to a station <600 LS away. It takes literally couple minutes max for you to escape combat and into supercruise, give yourself 3 or 4 minutes is plenty to get to a station (3 to 4 minutes can probably get you to a station 2000 LS away anyway) and less than a minute to dock.
Use shattered remains of caanopy to see markers. 7 mins is more than enough in most situations in my experience and im a fairly poor pilot.
I usually have a few mins spare when i dock.
If not res hunting more time might be needed but im a lazy res grinder!

You are in a res site, asteroids everywhere, your canopy pops and you instantly stop the fight and the guy shooting you says "oh heck his/her canopy is blown I will stop shooting so they can fly away" yea right. So you are looking for a way out of the mess of rocks so you can clear mass lock and get back to a station. You swap all power to engines and boost away multiple times to clear the mass lock, then you cruise a bit because we all know that if you turn right away to head to a station you end up right back where you started, in the rings of planet X. Now you are clear and wait...I am wanted? WTF? Now dock without getting ganked by the cops or jump out and back to clear the fine, or you get indricted on the way back to the station.
I know none of what I said ever happens and its nice that it can be done in 7 minutes. Hang from your nose on a hook for 7 minutes and it seems like forever, or go through what I just decribed and 7 minutes is notthing. :P
Flying by instruments is pretty easy and once the station is in sight you dont need the HUD, but the tension of getting their makes a normal person's brain short circuit and turn into dumb mode, so a bit of extra time is nice. :)
