Buying faction ships?
So far I've avoided joining a faction so I won't be harassed by other factions, but this means I know little about faction ships. I'm wondering if I join a faction do better ships unlock for purchase? I'm only seeing a small selection apear in shipyards. :/

powerplay has no ship rewards

Powerplay has it's own unique rewards, but as Edelweiss says, no ships. You can view said benefits by going to where your galactic map option is, down to Galactic Powers.

For instance I'm currently aligned with Arissa Lavigny-Duval, who grants bonuses to bounty payouts, and at four weeks pledged I have access to a unique rail gun that fires 3 rounds per shot.

You can also get a weekly payout which varies depending on how much work you put in. Currently I farm 1500 merits per week (30 merits per kill in my case) for a 5 million credit paycheck per week.

You are still able to land in hostile factions' bases but beware that you will be interdicted more frequently by their allies.

At the moment, the Federation offers about 4 extra ships, and the Empire 3, you should check out the wiki, all the current ships are shown and explained there, but yes, at the moment, this game doesn't have to many vehicles to pilot sadly. Make peace with the fact that many of them look damn good instead.

"powerplay has no ship rewards"

Guess I'll check out the wiki, but knowing you get unique weapons is cool.

Powerplay has nothing to do with the navy ranks you get with 2 of the major factions (Federation and Empire) so both those statements are true.
To obtain navy ranks for a specific major faction you have to do Bulletin Board missions for minor factions that are alligned with the specific major faction (these missions will have the ensignia of the major faction on the right)

Aiding major faction means no harrasment from others. Inpowerplay - yes, but powerplay doesn't provide ships. You could also note that one can max out his relations with all three factions and keep it that way without any consequences. (Major factions are: Alliance, Federation ane Empire. Others are either powers or minor factions.)
