Submarines
Just putting out an idea about what I would like to see in a future ED expansion or whatever.

Submarines!

You land on a floating platform on any of those water planets, and you can transfer into a submarine to explore a procedurally generated deep sea topography of the ocean floor. Mine, explore, fight or trade between platforms.

Actual water-based pirates! Waterworld the videogame on the surface! The Abyss below!

You have a choice of submarines, classed by hull strength and ability to explore under greater amounts of pressure. You have to watch your oxygen levels, tempature, be aware of currents etc. We're probably not going to see even simple alien lifeforms (let alone massive levithan-like threats), but I'm OK with that. Maybe FD could add an load of sterile water planets like in Interstellar or something.

And no, you obviously you won't be piloting your Orca or Anacondas underwater:

I heard in the future, the orca would be used for deep sea diving on water worlds, not sure if that is the case though.

We still don't know exactly what will happen when "landing" on water worlds becomes a thing. WIll the ships "land" and we "drive around" on the water? WIll the ships float and we need to fit dinghy-like SRVs that can float? Or will the ships sink, and we land and drive around on the seafloor? Without knowing even this basic thing, we won;t know wheter or not submarines are a possibility.

Lore-wise, the Moray Starboat was an original Elite ship design that was designed and built specifically to allow for undersea-to-space travel.

That would be pretty cool, btw, are there 100% oceanic planets in Elite?

there are ice planets, chances are that there are liquid forms of those as well ^^

i´m not sure if water rich, even full oceanic planets are confirmed by our astronomes yet though... Elite tries to keep it as realistic as possible with the current knowledge about our lovely milky way... so, who knows... ?

Right now, Earth is the only planet confirmed to have water. Europa supposedly has an ocean under the surface I think.

Sticking to the science is good, but I think certain liberties are permissible on stuff we don't have much information on, so long if it's not outlandish.

Actually they found liquid water on mars not too long ago. Can't go to it though, can't risk killing the only life other than us in the galaxy, assuming there is life in it.

Besides, you don't need water to have a liquid. Alcohol is a liquid, for example. Funny how that comes to mind right away.

Yeah let's have an alcohol planet! Whiskey River has a new meaning :P

There are Water Worlds in ED that are completely covered in water, except for maybe some icecaps. There are also some that are almost entirely oceanic, with just a couple of Hawaii-sized island clusters on a planet otherwise covered in ocean. Here's a thread on the Frontier forum with a pic of one I photographed, in a system up near the Ghost of Jupiter nebula.

I think the game automatically disqualifies such planets as fitting under "Earth-like", though, as we're dry-land creatures and need more than just one or two islands to survive on.
