When can life support fail?

I had my first time hunting at a RES and afer racking up a nice amount of cr, I decided to head back only to crash into one of the asteroids and break my canopy. To my horror, the life support module that I've never bothered to upgrade only give me 4 minutes and the nearest dock is 900 Ls away. It was a miracle that I made it in the last 10 seconds!
So are there any other situations that life support can fail, besides slamming head first into something?

if the life support module loses power for any reason, the countdown starts :)
many who build stealth ships will A rate the lifesupport then adjust module priorities to shutdown life support for alittle more available power and less of a ship signature which makes your ship hard to spot on radar :)

Your canopy can be damaged or destroyed when you are under fire, when you take heat damage, when you do an emergency drop out of supercruise. Also when your powerplant is damaged or not powerful enough to power all your systems, you could end up on emergency oxygen. If you are out fuel, your powerplant shuts down and again - emergency oxygen. Call the Fuel Rats[fuelrats.com] in the last case, if possible before you are about to die.
The life support system is something many pilots neglect ("I dont need that anyways") untill they do need it.

One other way it can fail off the top of my head is to take too much ship damage exploring.

or carying a unknown artifact, they tend to slowly kill off your modules :)

delivering these to a station can cause issues with that station, +40 deliveries and the lights in the station start to flicker... not sure what happens afterward lol

Have you not been reading the news? Several stations had to shut down for maintenance, due to technical issues. Canonn Research suggests the artifacts are the cause.

There is a new research station being built right now in the Maia system (pleiades) where those artifacts will be studied. I would assume we should deliver them there. Maybe they are already being researched at Obsidian orbital over there, but I am not sure about that.

Like mine just did, when you go after a wing of 2 pythons and a federal gunship and they all gun after you, shoot you to bits and it's 1600ls to the nearest dock, 5 minutes to get there or I die of no oxygen, I made it with 20 secods to spare and collected my 1.6m bounty, so chuffed, so lucky!
