How to add friend?

I bought this with a friend some days ago, and after some tutorials we wanted to play with each other, now wen i click on add friend in the main menu, i need to put my friends name. Is that his real name? or his steam name? coz we cant find each other.

It should be his CMDR name in ED. If you are not in the same system in the same instace (I.E. You can not target him directly) you need to do it from the main menu at the start of the game.
