Where to exit the game?

So far I avoided to exit the game when flying through an area without any station but I'm wondering what to do if exploring a larger, uninhabited area of systems in the future. Where to park the ship best to exit the game?

You can exit anywhere, you'll appear in normal space at your location if exiting while in supercruise.

anywhere safe, as long as you arnt in active combat or in a star just dip.

Whilst in Supercruise, throttle down to zero (not too near a star, planet or moon). Wait until your speed is minimum. Jump out of Supercruise, back into normal space. Stop. Log out.

And you won't be attacked by NPCs? Even if you have some valuable cargo?

If I have the time I set down planetside, I just feel better doing that but it isn't necessary, a word of caution when logging out in space though, check that your not in an orbital path, not sure if it happens anymore but I once logged back in inside a planet because of this.

The moment you exit to the main menu or close the game, you don't exist.

Lore-wise, you could say that the pilot goes into stasis and powers down the ship, making it nigh unpossible to detect(no heat, no EM). =)

Just don't log off in or near an asteroid ring. There have been cases of people logging back on in the middle of a 'roid, which then destroyed their ship.
Quitting anywhere else is fine.

Logging off mid-combat is pretty frowned upon though, and will get you marked as kill on sight by PvPers.

I'm an explorer, I always log out safely landed on a planet or body. I know I don't have to, its just my thing, makes me feel better. Couple of weeks ago I was at a Guardian site, doing the mats grind, game wouldn't let me log out, said it was going to move my ship to a secure location as I was parked in a "dangerous" area.
