Ed: I went back and looked, there were four of the same mission, the one I took wasn't the one that had threat 1, the rest didn't list a threat.
Don't let them see you land: A great big space ship swooping down to the base, hovering over the landing pad, with it's thrusters blasting away, and then actually landing; is basically a huge beacon announcing your arrival. Gondor calls for aid!
You're like the helicopter pilots in the Vietnam movie, you know the ones you hear blasting Ride of the Valkyries about 3 minutes before they actually get there?
The Stealthy option is already out of the window...
After I cleared my save I decided to try some delivery, jerks won't let me land to deliver stuff, so the second one blew me up because I flew to close to the landing pad.
Can definitely why some people don't like this game... trying a third restart now.
Read the mission descriptions. They usually warn you that scavengers may already be on site.
You're probably better off taking on ship missions or doing some exo-biology to start, by the sounds of it. Get familiar with the game, buy some better gear (you can find pre-upgraded suits/weapons at stations sometimes) if you can't make do with the basic ones, and then try your hand at the more challenging stuff.
For restoration missions, it's really common for raiders to either be there when you arrive, or drop in after you powered up the base. I never land my ship at the station. I land 2 km away or more, deploy an SRV and drive in. I dismiss my ship and don't recall it until I've powered up the base and dealt with the raiders (or confirmed there aren't any). It'll land on the landing pad and then I just get back in my SRV and leave.
Doing it that way, I can swap out my suits in my SRV so I can use my combat suit to deal with the raiders (or just use the SRV, the Scorpion is pretty good in these situations) and then swap to my Maverick suit to do the job I came to do. There's no risk to my ship that way either.
You also typically get a message while in your ship (or taxi) that warns you of the same thing.
In ED no ones babysitting you, no ones takes you by hand and helps you to come on your feet giving you simple missions first, that you actually can do within your limits. Here is no such thing. You are simply thrown into the world. There is no guaranty that you get missions you can actually do already. There are no special missions just for you or your level, the NPCs simply offer all kind of missions to everyone pick from. If you can pick a mission means not necessarily that you actually can do it.
Also its hard to say if the mission is going to be difficult from reading the description. There is a lot of randomness. For example you may pick two assassination missions, where the target of the first one is right around the corner and youre done in 10 minutes, or if youre unlucky the target is not where it was expected to be, so you have to track him down by meeting informants etc... this can take you on a half day journey.
You never know by description, the reward level how complex or difficult it will turn out. Every mission can go different ways and its random. Threat level allows assumption on how difficult and how certain would be the fights.
In the beginning I would suggest to avoid being involved in fights. Missions with threat level means fighting is very likely.
Keep an eye that you don't pick so called wing missions. Those have a blue wing symbol. These missions are most difficult ones, they are supposed to be done by a whole gang, not solo, even though they don't pay better. If you miss that and pick a wing mission, you will certainly be slaughtered in seconds.
Not every mission has scavs that will attack you. If it says that you're to take the settlement back from scavengers then they'll be there. But if you're going in to restore power, sometimes it'll have scavengers drop in or already be there, and other times it won't.
One way you can get around it is when you land at the settlement and you're being fired on, drop into your srv and then dismiss the ship and drive away from the settlement, then decide how to attack from the SRV after that.
You have to use the SRV or evade (crouching and hiding works, just like in other stealth games, if you're out of their line of site and then squat and hide and crouch walk away, you can hear them calling out looking for you). Until you can get the higher grade suits and weapons.
Try those civil war battles to get an idea of how the combat works, they have them in easy, medium, hard difficulties. Good way to field test your weapons.
Not picking up a combat mission means that you wouldn't have a direct enemy. But there are also bad guys who are not your direct enemy. They are just bad to everybody.
And yes, even threat 0 missions will kill you if you break rules they don't tell you about.
I'm not really how anyone can "check for scavs" when the lz is pitch black, or where I am supposed to load up on missiles, I guess I need to get out of the starter system and find something to scan.
Dumbfire missile launchers can be bought and installed in a ship outfitting menu at a station. Not every station will have every weapon available, especially in a starting area.
Ammo can be loaded at a station services title menu (the bullet icon).
It might be a good way to earn credits at the beginning. This way doesn't generate any enemies that you will have to deal with (just make sure that you don't carry anything in your cargo hold).
