1) Horizons 4.0/Odyssey unoptimized as hell
2) Getting a new GPU is NOT out of question in this situation. 2gb vram is criminally low in 2024 and i believe this game requires at least 3-4
It's been optimised constantly over the past 2-3 years. And at the same time, people have been upgrading their PCs, and prices for new hardware have come down. A 3060 is considered mid-level now, and runs the game flawlessly.
(Not suggesting the OP upgrade, as they've already said they can't. Just pointing out that for the average gamer, Ody will run just fine.)
I've come to terms with the fact that I'll be playing Legacy for a while. I would like to know, though: can you play with other people in Legacy, or only in 4.0?
Laptop or desktop? If it's a desktop and you're in the UK, I've got a spare 1050Ti you can have cheap. Got some spare RAM lying around too, but I'd need to know the spec of what you've already got to see if I can match it.
This is bull
Are you going to send them £350+ so they can get themselves something half decent? You don't know their circumstances. People have bills to pay... A new graphics card isn't a priority if you've got to pay the rent or put food on the table. Maybe you've never been properly skint, so you don't understand... I have. It's horrible.
Those are your bottlenecks.
And this are your options:
- upgrade your rig
or
- don't play this game
Your gfx card is just good enough for office work. The 550 is low clocked for energy efficiency and only 2GB VRAM are way to insufficient for gaming.
For comparison: i use an RX470 8GB with factory oc, and it works well due to higher clocks and more VRAM.
With 8GB RAM your operating system will use most of it. You should upgrade to at least 16GB, or go for 32GB if budget is not that tight.
If Frontier somehow managed to get 60 FPS on a TI-82, these people would say that it still needs improvement.
So just to confirm, I can play in Open with other people in Legacy?
Yes, you can play with other people in Legacy, so long as they are also in Legacy. I don't imagine there are a lot of people still playing it, but I know there are some. Progress doesn't carry over to the Live version though, so keep that in mind.
As for whether or not you can upgrade your PC... more than likely you can. Do you have any friends that know what they're doing in that department? If so, have them open up the case and take a look inside. See what you can do to upgrade, if anything.
Very often, these pre-built PCs have underpowered power supplies, so you often have to upgrade that as well. At least from my experience in Canada, which I assume should be similar to the US.
Upgrading your power supply is not usually an issue, but the newer Dell PCs have a proprietary PSU that uses a different connector from all the other ones, and you can only get them from Dell. I thought that was downright crooked, so I'm never buying another PC from Dell.
Getting an idea of whether or not it's even worth it to upgrade would be a good start. Depending where you live, sometimes you can find a place that sells used parts. Probably not the ideal way to go for a GPU, but worth considering. You might find one for dirt-cheap that will do the job.
Yes. There may be some groups you can find, IIRC there is a thread on the official forum.
