SCO drives vs FSD drives
Will the introduction of new drives change the situation and make FSDs simply worse drives?

The new A rated SCO Drive is flat out better than an equivalent A non-SCO Drive. It remains to be seen if it'll beat out pre-engineered ones.

Yes

ETA: it doesn't make the existing ones 'worse', it just makes the SCO a better choice when fitting a new drive.

How are the SCO better, aren't they just for the boost between planets?

No they have longer range too. About 8% more.

I said in another thread that I'd get the new Python but meh! it wasn't worth it, not for what I want to do with it.
My old Python was already A rated so I bought a 5A sco. it was all it was missing

I am surprised to see the A class SCO drives outright obsoleting the standard A class drives. I would have expected at least some minor trade-off.

You still have to engineer your drive if you want it to boot faster cause I have a 5A sco. and it takes 15 seconds to engage but once in supercruise man does it fly
Edit: I've also gained 3 Ly overall with it, nothing else but the drive change

Higher fuel consumption and heat generation aren't enough? I reckon the fuel rats are going to be busy over the next few weeks...

Fuel and heat come when you USE the SCO function, if you dont use it ? Well you have a normal FSD + 8% jump range. So yeah all our defaut FSD are now obsolete.

Yeah but of course people are going to use it. People are impatient.

Higher fuel consumption only when you are using overdrive, so yes the A class SCO appears to be better in every regard. That is a surprise mostly because it effectively obsoletes the other A class FSDs. I probably won't replace all the FSDs in my fleet due to the engineering cost, but would now never consider anything other than an SCO FSD in future builds.

I've noticed that the SCO drives seem to have the Optimised Mass and Max Fuel of the equivalent grade above it (B-Rated SCO has the Optimised Mass and Max Fuel of an normal A-Rated FSD, etc).

So an A-Rated SCO is like an A+ FSD, or maybe even call it an S-Rated Drive.

Hopefully FDev is considering a buff to the regular Frameshift drives so there will be a differentiating factor to consider when choosing SCO vs regular.

No need. It's better to simply outfit every ship with A-ranked SCO drives. It's an overall improvement in FTL technology, so why not use it all the time?

You lose the Faster Boot Time from the pre-engineered drives but pretty much irrelevant loss.

SCO is better hands down, engineered or not.
