Carriers cost 5 billion. Depending on what services you want then the up front costs will be higher, but they're optional.
Granted, Orthrus farming is vastly faster. As in, billions per day faster. But that comes with a great many caveats.
It is, firstly, a group activity. Finding a group isn't hard, but there's a lot of ways a bad group can screw it up.
Secondly, it is sitting firmly in the "exploit" grey area with crashed anacondas and HGE relogging.
Thirdly, pulling your weight requires a lot of investment; not just in credits, though the ships are expensive, but in time spent farming guardian sites and materials spent on engineering.
Now, that's not to say a little mooching isn't tolerated, but too few people with proper builds and you can't make the Orthruses die.
Fourthly, while it is the laziest and least interesting form of AX combat, it still AX combat. That means you must learn enough to at least run the gauntlets of interdiction and hyperdictions to get to the site.
My advice would be to stick to exobiology. Fast credits make the game worse, not better.
You can make 500-1B a week, quite easily. just depends on your scans and what you find.
High metal content worlds with either methane or sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere and a single bio signal; have a good chance of spawning stratum tectonicas. Argon and Neon can be good for some higher value frutexa/tussock samples etc as well ;)
The problem with those is, they're only known because someone has already been there and scanned everything...
You want to get out in to the regions that don't see much traffic instead and get the bonus for being the first to discover things. The exploration bonus is peanuts. Won't even come close to covering upkeep costs for the week... The exobiology bonus is a very different matter though. A single good bio signal, with first discovery bonus? That can pay for weeks of upkeep...
Mind you i am in a stock Type 6 so all i can do is no more than 25Ly but that is what i wanted just like the old days no engineering.
but as for discoveries to be found as first found there is a killing to be made.
