Fresh Install - Game Won't Start
Just reformatted my machine, installed latest NVIDIA drivers, installed Elite Dangerous. I start Steam, start the launcher, sign in with Steam account, click play, and nothing. Buttons go grey for a second then light back up. Verified integrity of game files. Rebooted. Not sure what to do.

The launcher now uses dotnet 4.8 or 4.8.1 (the game itself doesn't)

You'll need to do all the Windows Updates to bring that up to date. You might also be able to get that direct from Microsoft, although for Win 10/11 it's better to let the Windows Update handle it.

I'll look for a direct download. My Windows 11 Update says "You're up to date." Thanks for the tip Sighman.

Tried the 4.8 installer and got this failure... seems I already have it.
".NET Framework 4.8 or a later update is already installed on this computer."

this isn't the problem. chances are there's an app/overlay thats not letting the game launch. for me it was special K that caused it

I'm not sure what would cause that. I literally have nothing installed on this PC except my everyday Blizzard and Steam games. I just reinstalled Windows 11 yesterday.

I have resolved this on my own. Please let the dev team know that this needs to be included in the installation configuration. The only reason the game is working for others is because they already have it installed from some other software.

This is still an issue. Just installed it on a fresh machine and had to look up this post to fix it again.

That's not normal. Something else on your PC is messing with your VC install. 3rd party antivirus being too over zealous maybe?

No. This happens on any machine with a clean install of Windows 11. It would happen on yours if you reformatted it. There is an assumption made by the developers and the installer that VC already exists on your machine. This causes a problem only if Steam, then Elite Dangerous, are the first things installed on a clean install of Windows 11.
dont know about the VC, but i did it anyway for it to not work again.

here is the rest of story

launcher is not working at at all, says my account is nor registered and asking for 25-digit code. tried customer support from website, they gave me a steam link access for my frontier website, even that didn't work. also gave me a link to an alternate launcher to Lauch elite dangerous, which needs me to login with my frontier account, unfortunately it also does not login saying "missing field required" doesn't give any subtext when hovering over it with mouse or click the error message
