Everything else is VR.
Keep in mind that, while it supports VR, it doesn't use VR controllers, it's either Keyboard and mouse, regular controllers (i.e. Xbox controllers) or HOTAS.
Honestly, at the price it's now, i'd just buy it and try it. If you plan to play mostly in VR, skip the Odissey expansion for now (don't worry, you'll be playing the same game as everyone else, just with a few missing features)
One last thing, learning curve is quite a bit steep, specially at the very beginning. Be patient, and remember there's an active community you can any questions you may have.
You can change modes whenever you like, so start in solo or with a group of friends until you get the hang of the flying & combat.
Said it before. ED is a fun game. Plenty of bucket list items to do. Buy the game and DLC only on sale. You won't miss anything between now and spring.
yea you will like it. PVP is optional. There are different game modes. Open is where anything goes with pvp. Solo mode where its just you. And group mode where its you and perhaps your friends. You can switch between modes any time. So if you just want to go solo, you join solo mode. When you are up to meet with friends or participate in squadron events you usually join private group instance. There is also mobius network, which is basically a huge private group, but pvp is forbidden there.
You can play in a solo instance where you will be safe from other player and you will get the same content as player playing in open (the MMO instance).
To be honest you can play in open, most of the time you can have nice encounter but you risk to get ganked by an idiot that thinks it's cool to boom a player using his cargo/exploration ship.
Everything is accessible to you but it will require time.
Don't worry about PvP/PvE. You can tailor, or even ignore, combat almost entirely. And while it doesn't have as in-depth trading economy as say X4 or Eve Online, there's still plenty to enjoy.
BTW, If you're gonna play mouse 'n key (which is what i do in VR), then i recommend just starting a blank keybind set once you're done with the tutorials. Making it so that you can pretty much do anything without seeing your keyboard both in VR and pancake is really nice. Key press combos (Shift+X for example), and Key press hold bindings (like holding down a button as a separate function) are your friends! Also, it helps with the muscle memory to give everything a once-over too.
Good luck CMDR! o7
