How to prevent my Ship from overheating
Is there a way to prevent my ship from overheating everytime that I fire a Torpedo (I don't understand why firing a torpedo has any effect on my ship in the first place but, whatever) without fitting my ship with something? Is there something that I can turn off in my ship prior to launching a torpedo that might help with it?

This would depend I suppose on how "hot" your ship is running pre firing. Your ship's general heat properties. What ship btw? Etc

To start with what power plant are you using? A rated have best heat management so of you use lower you should probably upgrade it.

It's the Viper MKIII.

Power Plant: Reactor Bay Power plant - Rating B - Class 3 - Power Capacity 11 000

Power Distributor: Rating 3 - Class C.

I hope that helps. I'm kind of a newbie.

Heat sinks, turning off unnecessary modules.

Try upgrade to a A-rated class 3 power plant. that should help. if it prevents your ship from overheating i dont know. but A-rated power plant regardless of class allways has the best heat efficiency.

Okay. Thanks for your tips everyone; much appreciated.

Yeah so bear in mind that obviously firing the torpeado is always going to result in some additional heat output.

So yeah A rate your power plant.

If you are still melting when firing post that you sould try turning off modules that you don't need when in combat. When on the modules tab in the right menu (in cockpit) you'll find you can give them priorities, but if you have power and want to remove the heat then you'll have to stick them actually to "disable" or "off" (cant remember what it flags at atm and not in game)

So for example the usual suspects are

cargo hatch (don't think that outputs heat but always good to turn off anyway)
things like interdiction devices (as they are pre combat devices)
any planetary hangers
fuel scoops
FSD - remember you will need to turn this on to leave so this makes running away fast harder, but it does reduce power and heat.

Some people go even "tougher" but we won't go there right now lol

Now if you are still getting issues then look at installing some heat sinks, you'll then want to pop one when you fire, this is quite common on ships say if you are using Sheild Cell boosts anyway, though of course your ammo is then effectivly limited by your number of heat sinks, so you best have some other weapons!

Let us know how this goes.

Wow! Thanks @mrraybaker; this was very helpful! I'll put this into practice the next time that I'm in game. I'm still trying to understand how heat sinks work, so I probably won't use those right now but it's something to keep in mind. Thanks again! :)

How much power are you using? If you can't yet afford an A rated powerplant, you might see some improvement from downgrading to a C; I think B rated equipment has the worst thermal properties.

no it does not. C and B rated has the same heat efficiency.

Right you are. I always assumed B was worse for some reason lol.

So did I, but I've just had a quick look on the wiki and it would appear Freezer is right.

Heat sinks are easy, you set them to a fire group, and when you fire them it takes all the heat from your ship. Leaving you at 0 degrees for a short time.
Many people take them when they go exploring as when you scoop fuel you have to get close to the sun, and if youre in deep space you cant repair your ship without a certain itemfitted to your ship.

Don't set them to a fire group. Instead set them to a keybind in the control options, leaving your firegroups free for weapons/scanners. Same for chaff.
