What is the Point of Landing on Planets?
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any previous threads about it. What exactly can you don on the planets surface? Do you mine for resources? Find ancient weapon technology? Or just ride around in a buggy and look at stuff?

I mostly look for materials, It can be used for weapons or FSD...
But there are also some missions at planetary outposts.

theres outposts, mining operations, wrecks, beacons, lost cargo, defences, bases and more, plus planet based missions, scavaging and materials for synthisis. plus you can ride around in your buggy and look at stuff.

Basically these. Some of those missions even involve trying to shoot up outposts with your space dune buggy.

Also apparently some of the outposts have some somewhat reasonable missions to stack for Naval rank (Forget if there are any strong examples) while you drive your space dune buggy.

It's no "Sit in a dock trying to force donations to spawn", but it's less soul crushing because you are driving around in a space dune buggy, often shooting at things.

PS: Landing is crazy at first. Because gravity. (Keep your flight assist ON). Seriously watch the tutorials and then also make damn sure you are not trying to land on a x2 gravity planet.

Cool, thanks for the info guys. Sounds like a sure buy first time it goes on sale... or when I've grown bored of exclusively space missions.

Another question, do the dune buggie controls feel adept to HOTAS setup, or is a gamepad just as good?

Bought Horizons.
Bought a Keelback
Made a Keelback search and rescue
1x medium dumbfire missile
1x medium multi cannon
shield boosters
armor reinforcements
docking computer for full speed landings from 400 meters ;)
Run generator destroying missions from HIP 10716 ( need descover scanner to find the cities ) ~ sell it once you have the main cities replace with armor or cargo rack.
I search for wreckage and take the escape pods.
I watch BB then sell 1x pod for $250K or station rep.
Collect rare metals from crashed wreckage cargo racks etc.
Get missions to return salvaged drugs etc.
Easy shadowrun missions for $2 Mil to travel 100Ly

No need to even use the SRV until crash site is secured.
Can use your ship to multi cannon any sentry from 400 m range.
( no police scans on surface, so carry whatever goods you want)

At the moment, the only purpose of Horizons is to drive around on a bumpy surface and to experience the blandness of starports, but on a planet.

I have defended this game a lot in the past, but since the first "season" of the game isn't finished, I feel a little ripped off that I paid $50 just to drive around on a "scientifically accurate" version of Jupiter's moons.

I suppose if you enjoy grinding in a sparse, empty, sadistic pseudo-scientific universe, Horizons might be right up your alley. I am all for a Flight Simulator-esque challenge, but there has to be something to actually do. At this point in the game's age I am quite upset at the lost promise, especially with all these amazing open universe games coming down the pipe that promise so much more.

The point of landing on planets is so you can finally see your paintjob that you spent real cash on. And so you can see how awesome ships look from the ground.

Depends on what you want. Usually planets have stations, small outposts, random events (no random enemy ships and SRVs, tho, but they have drones). If you like exploring, then horizons will be a fine addition. Trading also benefits from it as you have more places to land. Combat... well, you will rarely encounter ships on planets, but you will get missions to infiltrate enemy bases or meet guarded caches on planet surface.

Actually, all joking aside, you didn't pay $50 to drive on planets, you paid $50 for a years worth of content that will be released over a period of time, planetary landing was the first iteration of that content for $50.

That's what happens when you make a purchase without reading what you get.

If you had done even a small amount of reading you would know that driving on planets is only one part of the expansion.

Or maybe you knew this already and you deliberately wrote a non-factual post for reasons of your own?

Rofl. My ship will always look boring, given the current status of paint jobs.

If you, like me, are immune to "pretty pictures", there's not much to do on moons. Surface missions are boring, loot not worth the hassle and the fun from driving SRV wears off quickly. I go there only to gather materials for synthesis and I do that only when I really have to, because searching for what you need, in quantities you need can take hours. One exception was CG in Maia, when I was harvesting that egg-thing from barnacles, but because many players exploited the respawn mechanic in game, it wasn't rewarding at all.
"Ancient weapon technology" does not exists. At least not on moons. You can find crashed beacons or containers with loot, but it's not worth taking unless you are a new player.
The only resources you'll find there are minerals, however I wouldn't call that activity "mining for resources".

There are some bitter people here, which is understandable.

However, you can find some pretty cool sites on planets. Venture out the bubble and you'll see
