Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous

Why is third person important?
It's understandable in a simulation you want to see the action and experience the world/galaxy through the eyes of the main character/ship. When we play EVE Online, Star Citizen, Flight Simulator, and many other games that have 3rd person view, we are astonished by the design and graphics of the ships. I never played EVE Online more than the 15 day trial but I can tell you, it's freakishly amazing the way the ships are designed.

Let's take a look at what draws you in. Elite Dangerous has a very cheap UI, looks very cartoonish with bright colors and doesn't immerse you in that SPACE SHIP feeling. Don't get me wrong, Star Citizen is terrible when it comes to UI as well. Flight Simulator's panel's are simply amazing. The most realistic simulation you will ever come across. However, when playing flight simulator, you're not always stuck in the cockpit. You want to see the plane and look from the wing view.

Why are so many people against this idea of a 3rd person view? Do you not want to see how deetailed and beautiful your ship looks? Would you rather be stuck in a cockpit view that doesn't offer much? I can't feel that excitement of my ship when I play elite dangerous. Sometimes I forgot what my ship looks like. All this "Glad they don't have third person view" talk is not neccessary. When you are given two options, the choice is yours. If you like first person, nobody is yanking your ear forcing you to play it. It's an option that will not hurt you.

If you ask me, I strongly feel that third person mode is important for a space simulation game. If you can't see the massive beauty of your ship, than what is the point? Go look at Eve Online and Rebel Galaxy. Remember, detail is in the ship, not the planets that all look the same. Think about it.

With that note, I've heard you can access a third person view for videos and pictures. Ctrl+alt+space bar. This gets me in camera debug mode but I stare in space with no ship. Sad!! Really wish I saw my ship and bring some life into this game.

@Ankido: so, after all these, what do YOU think, thread owner?
:-D
3rd person in non combat would be great. I use 3rd in every game i can. To me its less restrictive and adds to the game. It would sell a lot of paint jobs and the bobbleheads would still sell as they do in ETS2.

A real simulation is Flight Simulator. The ability to turn the plane on from cold dark. Setting flaps and trims, using complicated flight instruments to navigate from city to city. The requirements for take off and landing. Now that to me is a flight simulator. Giving you the most realistic feeling to flying. If you ask me, there is nothing real about Space simulation. Thrust up, landing gear fly away. Nothing simulated about that. Might as well add 3rd person view. I would have to disagree with the 3rd person view altering the odds of winning in combat. Especially in space combat where the action is fast. I just played The Division and played FPS games all my life. There is no advantage to being in third or first person view. Remember, some people get dizzy with first person view.

Note: I play both Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous. Star Citizen is probably the closest game you will get to simulation with space physics. The feel in space with Star Citizen feels real even though we don't know what realism is in space with ships in super cruize and using thrusters. Elite Dangerous just feels arcadish. Why not add third person, it wouldn't hurt.

Oh here we go with more of the "THIS ISN'T SIMULATION" arguments.

Disable Flight Assist if you want actual physics affecting your ship at all times. Flight Assist is the AI system of a computer built over 1000 years in the future that automatically provides counter thrust and corrective maneuvers to everything you do as a pilot. Moving forward? Throttling down will provide counter thrust equal to how close to Zero your thrust it. Rolling left? Counter thrust will be provided to roll the ship right when you ease up on the roll axis to keep the ship from rolling forever.

Disable flight assist and now all of that stops. You have complete and total control over your ships orientation in space as the ship will no longer correct anything you do, meaning if you want to slow down, you need to provide reverse thrust manually, or if you want to change directions, you will need to provide that thrust yourself or you will continue to fly through space in the direction you were aimed at until something else stops you.

Gee. it's almost like in the 34th century they've figured out how to automatically correct pilot error to make the process of flying a space ship as easy as possible.

I've played Star Citizen and it's uneccesarily complicated. They've essentially take in-atmosphere flight mechanics of the modern day and applied them to space, causing all sorts of obnoxious "features" like the fact that even the slightest turn will start to cause your pilot to black out.

You have essentially said "a simulator has to be extremely hard and complicated otherwise it's not a simulator" which is so far from the truth it makes me want to kill myself. A simulator is something that simulates something. Difficulty has nothing to do with it. Have you ever flown a space ship with FTL capable drives and rechcarging energy shields armed with high-intensity plasma cannons? No? Then who are you to say 'THIS ISN'T ACCURATE"?

Third Person will provide a wider field of view and a tactical advantage over people using first person view, which is more than enough reason to not add it.

The game is meant to be played in first person and nothing you or anybody can say or do will change that. If you are incapable of playing without third person view, then go somewhere else.

No one here said that he cant play the game because FP only. We talking about optional 3p view but yaeh - wont happen.
I would like to have outside view at least same debug camera but with greater distance.
Actually i just need some better view when i land on planets because inside cockpit i can't see all the ground "elements".
@LedoCool, Easy, when you switch to 3rd person the UI changes.

@Iongstar, Where is the beauty in space games if you can't see the massive detail in ships? That space feeling is not there without seeing your ship.

@mordin86, Looks like Star Citizen got it right. Just as I mentioned, I fight in first person and travel in 3rd. ED should remove essential huds for combat in 3rd person view so you can't combat unless in first view.

@Gera, very well said. I agree, the radar is by far the most terrible I've ever seen in a flight game.

@mrraybaker, we pay to play and have fun. This is not a tournament. There's no money involved who comes in first. It's about enjoying the game. When you play games that are 3rd person, you actually see that character which makes it more real. I never touched Destiny because it wasn't 3rd person. Everyone who played Destiny will tell you, the third person view was awesome until you went out in the real world and it switched to first person. Remember one thing.

I play Star Citizen. Even though it has 3rd person, I choose first person for combat. Same goes with ground combat. Remember folks, this is not real life. It's a video game. You're really not seeing your blind spots as you would in real life. 3rd person is not an advantage. First person cripples you. Unless you want to buy me two more monitors for a wider view. Bottom line, space is not pretty. It's black, lonely and quite depressing. The only beauty you see in the game is the ships and stations. Other than that, dead space. Where is the beauty in the game? Graphics 5, sound 7, gameplay 8, UI 3, overall 7.5??? IDK, you tell me.

Bottom line is, the UI is terrible. We're in the 21st century. It's 2016. Make it more intense and futuristic. The UI looks really dull. I just want to leave my cockpit and view my ship.

Honestly, adding in third person will ruin the game. We do need rear view added in the game at least, maybe rear view camera.
Rear view?? Now that's just silly. This is a ship, not a car. lol

But it would be a great feature tho, it can help players in certain situations. Like I dunno, reverse basketball dunk?

@LedoCool, Easy, when you switch to 3rd person the UI changes.
And you leave "how" for the later. Despite that "how" is the most important. For example, does it mean you wont lose your UI when your canopy is destroyed? What should be done to justify bigger field of view (if it is possible at all)? How it should be done? How to set same old elements on the new screen? (Left-right-down panels will have to be redone.) How to make both interfaces look similar, give same feel, be equal in terms of gameplay. And last - how to maintain them both is a simple way.
The only way I wish a 3rd person camera would be used is with a feature somehow like a "replay" when you're outside of the game (main menu for exemple) for video footage mainly, and such stuff.

As for 3rd person view for combat ? Hell no. Want to see your ship ? go debug camera, outfitting or SRV and there you go.

Nothing else to be said.

Old Elite has it :) also modern jet fighters do have mirrors.

Old elite was single player, there was no need to worry about the impact 3rd person would have in relation to other players.
Deleted a few posts because the star citizen fanboy comment.

We are here to discuss ED and not disparage people who enjoy other games.

Thanks.
