Odyssey's plants don't show up on the wave scanner and never have. The brain trees and biologicals from Horizons might. I honestly don't remember if they ever did, but I'm guessing that's what you're thinking of.
I'd just like to ping them to see if they're far enough away from the previous one.
But you know, the SRV is in Horizons so then they'd have to add code to hide that feature from Live, and also hide the 'Ping from the SRV Keybind' from the srv controls in Live, and it all adds a mass of complexity to the game code.
My "work around" for this is to target my ship as I drive around. This not only helps keep track of how far away I am from it so I can keep it from flying off on me, but I also use it to guesstimate if I'm far enough away from my last sample.
Granted, it doesn't give you a marker like you get on foot, so you kinda have to keep track of things yourself. I go by the distance from my ship, and it's position relative to me (the holographic target display shows its facing relative to me).
I think a simpler alternative would be to add another mode to the wave scanner itself. Have the current mode remain largely intact as "mineral scan mode" and then just add a second mode called "biological scan mode" that detects the original Horizons plants and the Odyssey ones the same way. They'd still have to add a keybind to the SRV controls, but now it would actually serve a purpose in Horizons, so they wouldn't have to hide anything.
