Most of the escape pods I pick up are dirtbag pirates who attacked me, and depending on how aggravating the interruption was I have left them floating in space rather than collect the cash.

You're probably about 5Ls from the star though... That's about 1500000 KM. You might want to bring a few things to read/eat/drink while you wait.
Maybe one of those explosive neck devices like they had in the movie "The Running Man"? You would have to also have some sort of monitoring on him/her, I'm sure in the future they would have implants that would broadcast video on sound so you and the authorities could know what he/she is up to 24/7.
And maybe if they played their cards right, you could actually use them as as crew, although I'm not sure I'd be too hip on paying them anything.
Hey, people aren't all bad, maybe they could change their ways and become a productive member of society.....maybe they had a bad childhood, and fell in with the wrong crowd at a young age, like Peter Quill.
Then again, he'll probably just try to steal one of my ships as soon as I venture out, and I'd have to fire the collar and separate his head from his body ☠️. Wonder how much paperwork THAT would involve.
