Companies go under all the time. They are sometimes selling things after the death knell.
No company can stay alive when their stock keeps dropping all the time.
RIP elite is dead its official
*points gun at my own head*
We're not talking about a bankruptcy here, we're talking about the completely bonkers idea that a company would spend a ton of money developing a new feature JUST so they could pull the rug out.
Frontier is a public company, with responsibilities to their shareholders. It's not two guys in their mom's basement stuffing handfuls of potato chips into their mouths while cackling maniacally about the totally awesome trick they're going to pull on the player base.
Oh yeah I agree with you on the whole tinfoil hat thing of running it in the ground! LOL
Well I would not go that far, I think it has years left but it is going to need a significant upgrade sooner or later if it plans to survive long term The graphics were a bit dated even at release but the space sim part made up for it.
He changed his role. He and his family still own almost 50% of the entire company.
You missed the second half of the sentence after 'suspending new player factions' which was 'for the time being'
Bruce said it right there on the livestream.
They need to suspend adding new PMFs to the game for *reasons*. Reasons are up for debate, but could include a new faction being inserted into the game (pro-thargoid cultists?), maybe permanent thargoid presence in the bubble, or... who knows, maybe the Guardians show up with space stations, bases, etc?
Either way, PMFs are on hold while all this develops, since they'll need to pick systems to change things around, and they can't do that with their left hand if the right hand is adding new player factions into the same systems.
And afterwards, when the dust settles, applications for new PMFs will presumably be taken again.
I'm reasonably confident that most of the relevant data could be ported over if they were to build a new engine (Cobra Mk II, perhaps?) with that intention in mind. If so, then it can potentially go on for quite a while yet.
There have been more than a few other online games that have gotten facelifts over the years, so there's no reason that Elite won't be among them. Besides, Odyssey already did touch up the graphics a bit. I feel like it's butting up against the limits of the engine at this point, mind you.
Given that they've used their proprietary engine for several of their games, it's not a stretch of the imagination that they would eventually look into upgrading it. Only Frontier knows what they're going to do. I'm just speculating here to make the point that it could go on for as long as they want it to or make a profit from it.
FACT is only fdev has the data to support what ever is what, not some forum-posters who have no interest in adding to the game whatsoever, only harping and denigrating the devs.
Honestly, "i like the game so i'm gonna list all these things i find wrong and everything is DOOOOOOOOOOM" is getting super old. :D
Wanting and even suggesting improvements is a whole other ballpark tho.
The other thing is the "new rework" which got pushed back another year, I don't know if elite is dead or not but the development team has either gotten so small they can't do anything productive, or they've stopped caring completely and given it the TF2 treatment of minor bug fixes every once in a while
As many had pointed out the tharg war is optional. You don't want to play? Don't.
It's not like someone is in your house with a gun to your head demanding you kill another Orthrus.
You're listening to the wrong people or watching the wrong youtube videos. You can build and arm an AX ship without engineering*. U14 brought Enhanced AX multicannon (gimballed, turreted or fixed) which you can buy with credits.
FDev did this because of people complaining about 'teh grind' and yet people still complain about 'teh grind' even when it's been removed. Priceless.
*I'm not denying adding a grade or two of engineering to thrusters and/or hull won't help, but it's not necessary. Also grade 1 and 2 use mats you almost can't avoid tripping over in normal gameplay.
