Open pvp, like looking for a needle in a stack of needles, it used to be active before they added CQC.
Planetary exploration, it was a great idea but the execution is not, enough said.
First person gameplay, imagine the worst fps game in your mind and you have Odyssey's fps gameplay.
People who knows that they only bought a license to play the game, they don't hate it. They either play it and enjoy it, or they put it aside and play something else.
Honestly it has reached its shelf life with me. I still play now and then but not very often and not very long. It could be much more but it won't be at this point. They listened to the 'community' that has mostly left to change the game and now we are left with a game that...well...it doesn't know what it wants to be. There is a ton of 'stuff' to do but much of it isn't very meaningful or creates a coherent experience. Lots of game play systems that are incomplete or do not mesh with other game play systems.
The best part of Elite is combat and always has been. Trading is 'ok' and mining is simply a simple loop to make credits and not very engaging. Exo-biology is...well...I just did it and I'm not impressed. I made 170 million from 2 exo samples in 30 minutes which is more than I would ever make via any other activity. And therein is the issue. FD always hands out credits like candy for activities they want you to do or the activity that is the new flavor of the quarter or year. Then the others get nerfed and no one want to do them anymore. I have zero interest in the Thargoid stuff and I did it for awhile but quit the moment I learned they were manipulating the results under the hood. No thanks. I believe we could actually fight them back and have a legit war. But nope. They can't do it. They have to constantly 're-balance' the system which is code-word for 'manipulate' the outcomes. And where is it going to go? Nowhere. If it ends I won't care and if it doesn't I won't care. It won't affect the bubble, it won't affect the bazillion other star systems in the game so what is the end game?
Exploration is ok but you are just exploring a billion copies of everything you've seen already. Sure the planet terrain is different but now it looks the same. And now it falls into the NMS trap of using a set number of plant assets across a bazillion planets and it just comes off as copy and paste.
The best part of planets in ED was that you didn't have re-used assets everywhere. The textures were even a bit different. But now it kind of all looks the same and every time you see an exo bio plant or specimen you realize there really isn't anything different about this planet from the last one. Odyssey really made the planets very same-y and boring. They use to be much more varied.
Elite needs a lot of TLC and changes but they will never come. It is the game now that it will always be. Adding more 'grind' paths and rank paths is not the answer. It needs so much more. Sadly I don't think the engine can do it or there is no interest by FD to do it.
People with your viewpoint are what ruined this game YEARS AGO.
No, the game does not cost $30 and never has. $30 is 'today' the price of entry, but there are multiple expansions, plus premium cosmetics. This game can easily run someone into the 100s of dollars.
That being said - the game is full of half-executed ideas, and has a laundry list of ideas that never even saw the light of day.
Power Play/Faction Wars: They are there, technically, but were never fleshed out and are largely ignored because there is no reason to engage. Even from a narrative point of view, the plot that grounds these wars was never expanded upon.
Ship Interiors: People have been asking for this since day 1. Literally. Now Star Citizen and Starfield both came along, and both feature ship interiors. Why not ED?
Crew: People have been asking for crews, of some sort, for ages. Once again, Star Citizen and Starfield now have this, while ED doesn't. The Federal Corvette is roughly the size of a real world aircraft carrier, and yet you are in it alone. It makes no sense.
NPC Wings: Why can't we have NPC wings that we can hire?
A Simulation that Breaks Immersion: Space Billionaire somehow can't by a chunk of raw nickel. He/She needs to mine it by hand. Why?
Segmented Community: It is very, very hard to encounter other players. The community is broken between Solo, CQC, and now Odyssey ground based nonsense.
The Grind: It's just too much.
Yep, and the worst part is there is NOTHING to spend these credits on.
I've got my top tier ships, but Credits aren't the 'real' currency, and haven't been for a long time. It's an illusion. Credits are worthless.
I ask myself the same thing.
If I don't like something, I stop eating it.
If I don't like a jacket, I don't buy it.
If I don't like one person, I don't start a friendship with him.
But with a video game, I'll stick with it. So it doesn't really matter to me if I like it.
I'll stay there because otherwise I have nothing to complain about in my completely
empty life.
I'm such a small sausage in real life, but here on the internet, your publisher, I can show everyone that I won't let that happen to me.
Finally I paid. Now, if you please, respond to my and only my wishes.
After all, I am the center of the universe.
Do you think I wouldn't migrate and play something else?
I want you to include things that are in every other game.
I want you to kindly provide me with a holodeck.
Why aren't the bulbs in the stand lamp behind the bar in Space Station XY interchangeable?
I want, I want, I want. Even if you haven't announced it.
Do it NOW.
Otherwise I won't play your game anymore. Do you really want that?
I will post very nasty, nasty Youtube videos and reviews.
Everyone should know what global problem is emerging here.
No, of course I don't. I want to keep whining, crying, just being stubborn.
Like a baby that dropped the lollipop.
My real life is otherwise so bleak and it's your fault.
Like I said above, I don't get it either.
After all, it's just a game.
But people also think of Star Wars/Star Trek as a religious prophecy.
So what do you expect from people who write Klingon or another imaginary language as a foreign language in their CV?
What do you expect from people who tuck a broom between their legs and play Harry Potter?
Summary:
I live an absolutely unviable zero, but on the internet the big zampano.
But with the racing simulants, they are also slowly going crazy.
Correct, materials are the real currency, and you earn them playing the game.
A lot of people want to buy these materials for credits (which would also make them meaningless) or be given containerloads every time they press a button.
Then engineering would be a one-click. Congrats, you've gone from a starter account to a fully-engineered Anaconda in a couple of hours. What are you going to do with it?
Nothing. Because none of the missions make any sense any more. They offer credit rewards (worthless), material rewards (meaningless under this scenario) and Influence - which is only useful if you're into manipulating factions for the BGS.
Hint: the latter is where your game goes from 1000 hours to infinite hours.
Find an NPC faction, learn about the BGS, and see what you can do about conquering an area of space on your own or in a group.
Even a few hundred dollars will not buy you a single vote on a developers board. It only buys you a license to play the game. Nothing more.
If you don't like it the way it is, then by all means - don't play it. That's what you get when you buy a license to play a game: you can play it, or you can put it away. Developers are those who decide what ideas to implement and how to do it in their game.
No, people with that view point are the ones who continue to play the game. Instead of crying about features that other games have, that they want to see here...
Would you like to check the price history? It's been available for as little as $5 on sale...
There's only one expansion currently (Odyssey). That's been available for as little as $17 I think? So ok, you're correct in that it doesn't necessarily cost $30. It can be noticeably cheaper...
The "premium cosmetics" can be bought for ARX currency which can be earned in game, or you can buy ARX so that you can buy those cosmetics quicker. As they are only cosmetic, there's no pay to win ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that some games do.
And before you try to talk about the Horizons DLC: Horizons can't be bought anymore, as it was rolled in to the base game for everyone a few years ago...
Having taken part in numerous faction wars, personally been responsible for causing wars between super powers, and helping to install factions in some systems while driving them out of others: You are wrong. The narrative is there, but it's always been in the background. You're not a part of the narrative. You're not important. You're an insignificant speck of dust making your own story.
We're already bored of running across landing pads, and through Fleet Carrier interiors. And Fdev have implicitly stated they're not working on it. It's mostly the same few people who keep asking for it. There's even one guy who comes back every couple of weeks with a different name to post the same old crap again and again. He apparently thinks we can't see his previous names, and that we believe it's more than one person asking for it; because he's done it under at least half a dozen different names (on the same Steam profile).
Wrong again, mostly. You can hire crew. What makes no sense is that you can't see them in one of the cockpit seats when they're active.
It would be too OP. People already cry about player wings and better ships beating on them. While it would be good for solo players, you can't give solo features that can't be used by open players. The solo players game affects the open players... So either get some mates and fly with a proper wing, or git gud.
How do you mine anything by hand in this game? Oh yeah... You don't.
Wrong again, mostly. CQC isn't even part of the main game, and barely anyone plays it compared to the main game. I run into other players all the time... You just have to go to the systems where other players actually are.
It's entirely up to you if you want to do the grind, follow some get rich quick scheme, min/max everything as soon as possible. You don't have to do it that way though.
This is a problem with the get rich quick schemes.
The top tier ships generally aren't as much fun to fly as smaller ships. That's on you for thinking you needed the biggest ships to do things.
Would you like me to help point out what else you're wrong about today?
From a dev standpoint, crew images are generated randomly in 2d (and many are frankly terrifying) while Odyssey NPCs use a completely different set of assets.
Look at the fleet carrier crew - you can keep rerolling those to get new variants, and come face to face with them behind the Pioneer counter, the Vista counter, the bar, and so on.
However, they will never be able to duplicate the Horizons-era 2d faces without a gigantic amount of new artwork and 3d modelling.
Which leads to my point - the ***storm of complaints I would expect when people lose the familiar face of the NPC they've had for 5-6 years, and are instead given a completely new Odyssey appearance.
Yeah, I've seen more than my fair share of the potato people lol. Some of them are almost as bad as Oblivion characters lol!
I did not know that... That's cool. I better go earn another couple of billion credits so I can finally buy one lol.
It'd be nice if you could use your holome character pool to assign what your crew looks like. I've got two "Stig" characters; regular Stig (all white flight suit/helmet), and anti-Stig (all black suit and helmet). Faceless drones to pilot the SLFs... Or Little Red Kochanski and Lister characters for my mining ship (Red Dwarf - dead original, I know...
You ignore =/= everybody does

I always play solo when I'm busy doing my own thing, or PG when I want to play in teams or larger groups. Why would I bother with open?
CQC is a completely different game mode, and barely anyone plays it.
Odyssey is where most players are these days. And there are loads of groups with organised events. (Not sure whether it's still going, but there was even a group organising Odyssey on-foot CZ for regular chaos.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOpVmIsmfvQ
The reason groups organise events like this in private is because if you tried to set it up publicly and run it in open you'd have fifty gankers trying to get in and ruin it.
Combat (space) sucks in this game (IMO) compared to every other space game I have though I'm not much into space combat anyway.
If they'd fix two things:
1) Make the game playable single player (no Internet which can and does happen) even if they shut down their servers tomorrow (which could also happen)
2) Fix the long in system transit times QoL issue
...then it'd be a great game.
Frankly I can't imagine how anyone enjoyed playing the game in the past, butt glued to the spaceship seat, one station to another, never leaving the ship. I'm glad they did Horizons Odyssey but fix the long transit times, some of us are getting older and don't need or want the "wow space is big" moments.
