Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous

Anyone try this game with a thrustmaster Flight-X Hotas?
I've been trying to find something to play with it, and the options are more limited than I'd hoped lol. Star Citizen Sucks with it, as there's no natural way to set it up, you have to use external programs, and it's just a pain in the ass. I never was able to get it working enough before I lost patience and unintalled. (Luckily the access I had was free with my Vid card, or I'd have probably been even more angry lol).

I need to do a bit more research on the game as a whole, to see if it's something I'll actually like (should be, as I love sci-fi games) but first things first, if this thing isn't going to work, or is a pain in the ass to set up, then I'm not going to bother.

Thanks for any answers!

Lots of people here use the HotasX, myself included ;)

Reconfiguring the controls is basically essential, but is pretty straight forward.

I use the paddle on the back of the throttle for lateral thrust, the two buttons next to the paddle for vertical thrust, throttle for flight control throttle (don't set it to thruster throttle, otherwise it won't work in supercruise), twist the stick for yaw...

With regards to the throttle, the default option is for it to control "thruster throttle" or something similar. At first this sounds perfectly reasonable, but it doesn't work in supercruise mode. Change that so your throttle is bound to "flight control" instead (which works in both normal flight and supercruise).

You will still need to use keyboard shortcuts for some options, so landing gear, cargo scoop, lights etc... Alternatively if you've got an android tablet you can use Roccat Powergrid or similar. Another option is voice control software...

Play around with it. Don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking you want to change a few options as you get used to flying ;)

Thanks for the quick answer. Guess that means it's time to do some research on the game. :)

Elite supports pretty much every input device and as much as your PC can support (including head trackers) because it let's you remap function to buttons and axes however you want to. I don't think there is a premade profile but that's usually not very practical anyway.

If you're looking for combat, you've found it ;)

Trading/Mining? Personally not my cup of tea, but there are plenty of players out there who love it... I much prefer the adrenaline rush of combat.

And you can safely ignore a lot of the negative steam reviews. Lots of people were butt hurt that they had to pay for the dlc, so they all got together and downvoted any positive review and upvoted negative ones.

It's also a lot more fun when you're flying with wingmates.

I too have the t-flight.

Absoloutly love it.

Works well... confiures easily in game.

Only niggle is if you get Horizons and trying to find a way you are happy driving an SRV... as obviously thats not what it's designed for... but you can for sure do it, it just takes some getting used to.

For flying a ship... well I'ts like flying a space ship is in my head!

I generally glance through reviews. I found it interesting that one guys said don't buy it because it's boring, and he had 142 hours in it lol. That amount of time is worth the purchase price imo.

I'll have to find people in game to play with, as no one I know plays it lol.

What's an SRV?

Also, does this game have a monthly fee? I see it says MMO on the store page. I'm watching a review of it now, will watch some gameplay videos later lol.

No monthly fee.

There is a yearly expansion you can purchase should you chose.

This years adds a few features, including landing on some planets/moons... which you drive around in an SRV - think moonrover crossed with a really ugly car lol

This years expansion is called "Horizons" and is currently included in the "Delux" version of the game you can buy on steam.... comming soon to this expansion is crafting via meeting folk called engineers, and later shap launchable fighters and multicrew and a few other things.

However the Base game is more than playable for a 100+ hours without Horizons.

Surface Recon Vehicle, currently only one available (the Scarab).
And there are people with over 1k+ hours of gametime who complain about the lack of content.
There is no monthly fee, the game is funding itself through yearly seasons which come with a year of bigger updates. Horizons is the second season (base game being the first) and also the name of the first expansion that added planetary landings on airless worlds, the second expansion being the engineers which is delayed a bit but comes in a few weeks and with some polishing of existing features.

An older review I personally found pretty fair and neutral (it's a bit older though):

The game is certainly not holding your hand in any way, it will not tell you what you should do - that's entirely up to you to decide.

for a good TM Hotas X bind look at this post

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=223392

it has all of the buttons binded that you will need even the SRV ones for horizons.

I like HOTAS-X + TrackIR. I used rudders for a while, but this game is too arcade-y to really need them much. It's a good game to pick up on a STEAM sale. Full price is too much, since you've waited this long anyways.

I have the thrustmaster t flight x and love it especialy for 45$ I also got the voice attack program for 8 dollars I think and I never have to touch the keyboard. LOVE the voice attack. adds much more immersion. You just need to learn to phrase your commands correctly
