Read my post. Unless 2.1 did some heavy changes in that regard, it's how it's been working since 1.6.
The genre got ruined by themepark design and became nothing else than boaring quest ♥♥♥♥!
Two people can take on two identical missions, unless 2.1 changed it.
And while it works it still is a poor design for coop.
However as of late Elite has some of the better coop play around. I bought ESO during the summer sale and while that is advertised as an mmo and/or coop it feels nothing like one. All quests are done by each player in the group as if they were in solo. Dialogue takes place only on the local player machine and each player in the group goes through their own dialogue. Doesn't feel right at all.
At least in Elite you somewhat feel like a wing even though there are some poorly designed aspects such as missions, FSD jumps from system to system, wingman nav lock dropping you if you are nav locked and friend goes to SC, wingman nav lock dropping you nowhere near your wingmen, wanted status not being applied across the wing and forcing you to get hit by each wingman in the wing before being able to fire on them and NPCs failing to realize you are a wing.
