I have avoided nebulas so far, I don't really know why. These pictures convinced me I really should pay more attention to them.
Here are some of my favourites from my collection
After trecking through "space mud" for a long time this was a welcome sight

Aye it can take some time.
And the rewards are "low" because most have been catalogued... The "rose in the mud" I was so far away from any beaten track and it was so small I thought I would be the first... nope.
A lot of time is spent on the Gal map trying to look for the "best angle" but a lot of it you just have to jump from system to system and see what is there... the supernova one I jumped to every single adjoining system of the central black hole for example. Some you can dismiss straight away say if you want to land and there is nothing landable, other times you go land on a plaent thinking you'll get a good shot... only to realise you can't because it's too flat, too bumpy etc
Its worth it though for the good shot!

One large blue star (no other bodies) totally surrounded by bright blue clouds in every direction, but they're not thick enough to stop you seeing other nebulas. I think the big nebula you can see in one of the screenshots is the California Nebula...
Not that far away either, think it was less than 1000Ly from populated space...
The further you get from the star, the brighter the blue gets. I think those screenshots were taken between 10 and 20 kls away from the star.
