Quick question about illicit cargo and planetary stations
I've just come back to Elite over the last week and am enjoying myself running missions. I'm currently on a salvage mission where the goods are classed as illicit, and I need to deliver them to a station on a planet.

I've read up on how to avoid / reduce the risk of being scanned entering an orbital station but I was wondering if there was any difference when having to land on a base on a planet. For instance the 'fly damn fast into the docking ring' won't work, is there an equivalent tactic or do you just run silent and hope?

Cheers in advance :)

Planets for me tend to be easer......

Mostly because I've never, ever seen an NPC ship near a starport! They are the illegal delivery missions I take first and do first.

I never even have had to use silent... just land as normal

I've been out of the bubble for a month plus though so not sure if that changed with the last point update.

Excellent news, thanks :)

A cop did try to scan me once just as I was about to sit down. I quickly retracted landing gear and was able to boost out of his scanrange.

I was able to turn around and land without being bothered again.

I'd say, make sure you land as soon as you can and enter the hangar and be prepared to boost at all times.

Cheers Ray, I would've forgotten to enter hangar for sure so good advice!

the downside of planet stations is that it's harder to break field of view. with a station you can usually quicky enter the station and once in the other side of the mail slot you can escape the scan by escaping field of view. That doesn't happen in planet stations plus you have gravity. Upon scan start the best idea is abort landing and boost away and try again. A security scan on a planet or outpost can kill you fast, since upon scan completion and bounty or illegal items reveal the station revokes you docking permission and shots you down.

Would sneaking in with the SRV work?

Are you sure about the revocation? Being scanned with an illicit cargo before was only slapping you with a fine, but no problems with landing, or being shot by local security. If you are wanted in that system, and the local security scanned you, then yes, they would open fire at you.

no.

Well unless you only had 2 cargo lol

If you are scanned next to a station while carrying illicit cargo, the station and security will fire upon you.

I always just go into silent running near any station/planet facility. With my setup I can pretty much fly my normal approach and usually have to pop 1 heat sink (sometimes) in the process. I usually pay it extra safe and go silent form about 5 KM out to after I've touched down...I know that's not necessary, but I can so why not?. Any time I have illegal cargo I just do this. Costs me 25 CR to replace the heat sink. totally worth not even worrying about getting scanned.

Even did it in my Anaconda a few times. Sometimes I get the "hey, where did you go?" or "We know what you're up to" message...but they still can't scan me.

Yes, I was scanned once while approaching the slot and my landing priviledges were revoked and I was attacked. It has only happened once though, as I haven't allowed it to happen again.

Maybe the rules differ depending on the faction.

are you sure you weren't so focused on sneaking in you forgot to ask for landing permission? i've done that and gotten that result before.

I've had it happen.... But only when I got scanned and was wanted for murder in that system

Smuggling is just a fine.

well then that's just the warrant scan...has nothing to do with smuggling.
