Palin is unlocked by getting at least 5,000 LY away from the career start point, not total hyperspace distance.

Basically that.

Doesn't really matter where you go as long as you clock 5k ly, personally i went to Sag A.

I didn't have to go anywhere. By the time Engineers was released, i'd already travelled to the far side of the galaxy :D

lucky you ;) well tomorrow I will outfit an ASP and do my first real exploration trip - have to say, the more I think about it the more excited I am for it. I will make it a memorable experience :D

I went to Jaques Station, it was amazing and I can't wait to go back there.

It does depend on how you define "interesting".

Pretty scenery and nebulas? There are several at around 5 kLY away, in the Westerly direction (aim for Sothis, and keep going past it and outwards. The Crescent Nebula is about 6 kLY out; going there via the Elephants Trunk is more scenic, or the wacky NGC 7822 region, with it's spectacular "beam" of bright stars for a slightly longer detour.

If giant stars is more your thing, I'd recommend the route the other way, and aim for Eta Carinae, 7 kLY away via the largest star in the game, VY Canis Majoris.

If planting your flag on undiscovered planets is more your thing, then aim for nothing. Literally. Stay away from the major "tourist arteries" that head out to the Core, Jaques, the big, pretty nebulae etc and you should find plenty of stars no-one else has ever visited. You can use the trip for double purpose, qualifying for Palin and ranking-up with Farseer (by selling her the exploration data).

If all you want is the magic 5000 number, then can I suggest keeping an eye on your statistics screen in your status page. In among your stats for number of kills, insurace claims, trade profits etc are exploration stats, which includes a "max distance from start" stat. That's the number Palin wants to see hit over 5000. So just keep flying until you see that number hit the target, and then fly back. Or, if exploration data sales and incresing exploration rank do not interest you and the constant jump-jump-jump to get 5000 LY out has driven you space-mad, then self-destruct and teleport back, for the cost of a ship rebuy. The 5000 LY still count for Palin (though you lose any scan data).

i went out just past the lagoon nebula to get my 5k up, took about 6 or 7 hours round trip (back to the bubble)

(edit) - that time included some star and planet scanning along the way, could be done A LOT quicker..

Phew! Just returned from this dreary quest and thought I'd add my two cents. It's a cautionary tale. The moral of which is: don't wander too far from known areas.

I did some research before I left. People recommended all kinds of sightseeing destinations and would always add "OR, you can just fly off in some random direction and find new worlds and wonders to behold." I chose to be adventurous (Big Mistake).

I loaded my ASP Explorer with nothing but minimal safety features and a giant 6A fuel scoop (which is super great on long journies). Many of its components are engineered. It has a 46LY jump range. I would leave a link to the coriolis copy of my ship, but I guess that's frowned on here.

I plotted a course that would take me past a few nebulas that I thought would be kewl to see up close. I was holed up in ROBIGO. I chose my final destination to be the HEGUE IM-W C1 system, which would take me past the Witch Head, Orion, and Seagull nebulas. With hope in my heart, I blasted off with my plan to conquer the unknown.

I didn't get more than 6 jumps away from the bubble before my scans started to reveal what I was going to be seeing for the entire duration of the journey; nothing but icy, worthless worlds in a never-ending emptiness.

I never saw ANY watery planets. I ran across exactly 3 USS events during the entire round-trip. I sputtered around in dozens of systems, getting detailed scans of things, but it was just system after system of nothing. All the stars around you have the same name, with just a jumble of letters and numbers added to distinguish them. It was a long, dull, mind-numbing ordeal.

But I stuck it out, thinking that just committing to it would be the fastest way to get it out of the way. At least I'd come back with a trunk full of scan data.

According to my EDDiscovery logs, the trip involved just over 1,700 jumps and the better part of two days IRL.

In conclusion; I'm back. Yes, the nebulas were cool up close. No, I beheld no other wonders. Yes, I'm hoping I can parlay all this scan data into some faction rep later down the road. No, I would not take the same route again.

My advise; I figure I could have come back with a LOT more data and mats if I had planned the route to at least touch along populated areas along the way. Most of us want our grinding times to be as efficient as possible.

You can still steer clear of the main tourist flight paths but, If you like killing many birds with fewer stones, I would assert there are vastly diminishing returns for going where no man has gone before.

What I did, I went 5kly from Sol, got message for Palin -> hit self-destruct, couldn't be bothered to fly back. Exploration is too much boredom for me.

I forget, I looked on EDDB for a station about 5025LY's away to be safe, then I jumped to it.

The Elephant's Trunk nebula is quite nice for a vist

I went to Eta Carina to check the guardian ruins there in a Clipper.
Came back with a hold full of guardian stuff.

yes....you do. you're thinking of Farseer.

I went along the path to Colonia stopping at the stations on the way. there was a little nebula just over 5000 LY out in that direction.
