I tried to post this on Frontiers forums and the thread got locked so since I play through Steam here it goes.
So I don't know why this happens but based on my fix, which ironically was suggested by Frontier as a troubleshooting step, I would guess that Frontier has bad net code that is purposefully disconnecting me for what it thinks is inactivity.
So I tested my fix by leaving myself logged in for 12 hours. Not one disconnect. I don't have points where I can say this is what caused me to disconnect. I know others say when they warp, access the mission board etc but I don't see a pattern. Having said that after I tell you my method I would love to hear some feed back on whether this works for more people. I also created a short cut for myself that I use to run the fix at the same time I start ED through Steam.
In Frontiers troubleshooting guide for this issue they ask that you set up a continuous ping to have running while you play so that when you get disconnected you can look at it and see what it says happened. You do this by opening a command window, cmd.exe, and typing in it the following:
ping -T -L 999 bbc.co.uk
You might be able to use other urls but I used the bbc because it is what they suggested.
With that running, which pings the bbc url forEVAH I have zero, 0, ZERO!! disconnects. I have now played 6 days a week for 8+ hours a day with no disconnects.
So there is your work around from their garbage net code and Frontier, seriously stop blaming our internet connections, our machines, et al. Fix your damn net code. I play dozens of games and have exactly no issues like this except in your game. I love your game, and overall it is a positive experience, but it's you not us.
Oh and the station design is bad. Well just the door way but still. Maybe think about seriously allowing for different station entry shapes. having a mail slot at every station despite having different station designs is a bit tedious. Plus it would make more ship designs possible. Like a tube cargo vessel. Or spherical ships. I mean I love the star destroyer theme as I love Star Wars but variety is the spice of life.
Update...didn't work. Disconnected 10 mins into playing. Which takes me back to an original question, why would pinging my router resolve my disconnect issue? Oh, and thanks, again, for responding JCMI. Your solution didn't work for me, but it might have.
also make sure no one is running torrents on your network. they can cause a disconnect frequently too
I did have the thought that my disconnects are happening mainly when I'm Frame Shifting to a destination, got me to thinking that there might be a drop in net traffic, and perhaps a socket is getting closed? But, in truth, my networking knowledge is too noobish, so I'm hoping that Frontier recognise my issue and provide an answer. Although it seems odd to me that there seems to be plenty of peeps having or had this issue and the only solution available appears to be the ping one.
Anyhoo, tnx for the reply, Wolf. Fly safe.
I put in a ticket at Frontier before I made my original post. It has been years and they still have not found or fixed the issue. I will stick with my auto ping.
