Player/ship callsign when docking
Have been playing for quite a while but took a long break until I got my RIFT which sucked me back into Elite. I noticed now when approaching stations they'll call out "Lakon Romeo India Pappa". I'm Flying an asp or DB Scout and pilot name Ripthruster. Is this a fairly new thing? I don't remember it before.

Can find the list of NATO phonetic alphabet names here:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_phonetic_alphabet

oh, it's based on the nato phonetic alphabet? Cool!

I don't think so, when I was in the US Army we used the whole NATO phonetic alphanumerics, but I think some of their letters differ.

For instance, I don't think they say Gulf, Yankee, or Zulu (They say Zebra I think for example), etc.

Wait... They are randomly generated?! Now I feel bad for not paying too much attention to this at all... :/

no, they aren't randomly generated. It's <Ship manufacturer> <quasi-military phonetic representations of the first 3 letters of your cmdr name>

EG: Since my name is cmdr Jakapp and my ship is a t6 transporter (made by lakon), the callout I get is "Lakon Juliet Alpha Kilo" when they tell me to request docking. Should I change to a sidewinder, I'll be hearing "Delacey Juliet Alpha Kilo" (or thereabouts).
Well they are kinda random and unique to commander unless commander uses similar name to yours...

And I guess mine is Lakon Whiskey Oscar Whiskey

I honestly didn't notice it until now, it's a pretty badass feature.

what the Devs need to do is assign every user a unique serial number for ships... they did that in Frontier Elite games... well I think they were all random cannot remember now lol...

I feel pretty silly now. I thought it was an amazing coincedence that my callsign was the beginning of my name. Oh well, lol.

It's UK/NATO phonetic alphabet. Golf, not gulf (I odn't think anyone has ever used "gulf" as a phonetic?). And they still use yankee and zulu... Unless it's some bastardized phonetics used in game...

O is Oscar...not Omega. I didn't pay attention, since I am a new player, but if they said Omega, then it's not the NATO/Military alphabet.
