Warning of impending doom, it's what I do best.

THE LAST UNKNOWN PROBE HAS BEEN DESTROYED.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the probe Rizal72 had was destroyed by my Imperial Cutter after some recordings. However, this was not intentional and there is no logical explanation as to why it died other than a bug. I sadly do not have a video recording of it as I had just stopped my software to let Audacity pick up the full audio without any interference in one last EMP test. Thankfully, my video software picked up a 96 Khz audio from the game with everything else muted, which is about four times better than my original file. Audacity also picked up the probe's death and ship sounds, which should prove that the probe getting destroyed was not my fault. For a full explanation, read the bottom of this post.
Now, onto the science and my findings!
The first experiment done was to target CMDR Rizal, who still carried the Unknown Probe, and honk him using the Advanced Discovery Scanner in close range. His ship did not move or react. I have video footage.
The second experiment done was the same as before: use the ADS, this time with the probe floating in space, and record video / audio up close with the debug camera. Using the debug camera, the EMP knocked me out but no sound was heard. This confirms that the probe is transmitting to the ship, and the ship only.
The third experiment was the same as before, but this time inside the ship, up close and with better audio. As I said above, I do have video footage and 96 Khz audio of the full probe EMP. Downloads down below, YouTube video coming in a few hours.
The last recording I wanted to do was to use Audacity to pick up audio, and only the audio, which was my number one priority. Sadly, the probe apparently clipped my shields without even making contact or being hit at a sufficient speed that would destroy it. I have poked artefacts and probes before, with the same ship, I know how to handle them and I know the safe distance. I was not expecting to hit the probe, it didn't sound like I did, the probe had just been released and yet it still exploded instantly. It surprised me, to say the least. Audio of the probe's death available down below.
Now, onto the real steps to further science! It sounds obvious, but... WE NEED MORE PROBES. Even if Frontier can give me back one probe or both, we still need more. Plenty more. We have reasons to believe they could be free floating, or could be "easier" to source than Threat 4 Convoys in select systems with an unbelievable defense fleet deployed around it. We need to find how, and where.
For those interested in hunting UPs in T4 Convoys, please read this page for specific information. Do it right, be extremely patient, be prepared, and you might just get one of those probes.
Now for the audios!
Here is the new, 24bit 96KHz recording of the probe's EMP. I was lucky to get my ship knocked out further back, which kept the probe centered on my screen (and thus, the audio) at all times. The YouTube video will prove that shortly: https://soundcloud.com/cmdrmhyre/eli...p-24bit-96-khz
As for the probe's incident, here's my audio: https://soundcloud.com/cmdrmhyre/eli...nt-death-sound
I would like to formally organize a new Unknown Probe hunt using convoys, next Friday or Saturday, same time as last week. Anyone willing to join is free to private message me, and we will perhaps do this in my own private group (PC).
Yes it is. Members of the Canonn Interstellar Research Group (they have a website: canonn.science) figured it out (Rizel72? i believe). A spectrograph picture of the audio was provided by the comments section on some YouTube videos and has been played with by forum members as well.
I came to Merope to help investigate and see if I can find any free-floating. So far, the only Unknown Probes found were ones being shipped out of the area in Federation fleet convoys (usually consisting of Condas, Python(s) and Vultures, or Fed Corvettes, Python(?) and Vultures). Only way to get a UP right now is by beating down the shields of the convoy ship carrying it, launching a hatchbreaker drone at it, scooping the probe, and then NOPEing out of there before the convoy catches up with you.
Things are really cranking up in the ED universe! If you go over to the Frontier forums, you'll see that Canonn has multiple, hundred-page long threads devoted to the Unknown Artefacts (UAs), Barnacles, and now the UP. Lots of discussion and theorizing going on in their latest thread. Here's a link to the thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/268667-UAs-Barnacles-other-mysteries-Thread-7-The-Canonn
BTW, if you fly into Merope, remember that Obsidian Orbital is ~4ly away in the MAIA system. It does not have an outfitting option in the menu, so if you plan to fly soon, make sure you're ready to come as you are.
Nooooo... :( I have to keep up on the forums better, lol
Mighty brave of you sir! Are you an official member of Canonn?

This was my copy paste from the forum ... i was not the commander.
Who says the signal is in 2 channels? Chances are that's just how the audio has been recorded. Have you tried it in mono?
Except as I previously posted, there is absoloutly no reason why an alien civ would mark 0 degrees north/south the same as us, or use the same scale for the lines etc. They are arbitary.
