Yes.
You can also make your own private group and do the event in there, if you want.
Then you can invite friends to help out as wingmen. ;)

no wonder i've seen maybe 2 people total in all the time i've played this game... this game heinously punishes players for trying to enjoy the "multiplayer" part of MMO. No shared missions, no player-driven economy, no player-to-player trading, impossible to even find people to begin with, i'm not into PVP in a game that costs me money to die but if I were this would be a horrible game for that too. Where's the fun in this hugely massive universe if there's nobody there to share it with??? Can't even mine with a group, there's literally nothing that can be done in a group that isn't MUCH more effective and less hassle when done solo.

Welcome to ED! Lol, but seriously............yeah. There is not much reason to group up or even play in non-solo mode. I hope one day that will change. I am hopeful. (Though you will see people just say, "Stop expecting this game to be what it is not, blah blah". Though I feel, if enough ask for it, they will consider it. As many people keep pointing out, this game is not "finished" and has a "ten year plan". So in my opinion, that means we should nicely push for features we want. :)

no shared missions - yes, you only have shared profit not co-op missions.

no player-driven economy - maybe not to the extent you'd like but there is player influence over the economy, but yes it's not player driven.

no player to player trading, yup there isn't, unless you wanna trade it directly with players by dropping cargo and catching their cargo and doing the trade that way, it's not efficient.

Impossible to find people - you can find them if you engage with player groups, the game has a lot of systems and players doing different stuff in different locations, unless you look into an organized player group you can find players in locations where CG, engineers, starter systems, popular trade routes... other than that you'll only find players almost luck based because you need to cross paths with them.

PvP without consequence - well...yes this isn't a pvp game, it has pvp but as you stated, if you die there are penalties for it. I'd suggest CQC (pvp dogfight mode) but it's hard to find players.

mining with a group - you can, you just have to search for a group of players doing it, almost everything can be done in a group on elite, even non standard activities like racing (no systems ingame to support it but you can just join players and do it), fuel rats did that with the fuel system, explorations groups exploring in sidewinders and stuff... none of that is told ingame, and you can just do it with other people, it just requires a little effort on finding those groups of players.
Is it less effective doing stuff with other players? probably yes, like everything you do with other people you can be slowed by them or you can slow them down yourself too.

Elite is a sandbox where with a little of creativity you can go a long way.

Uh. I'm totally with you in giving the game more things that make it viable to team up and play together.

But people often come from e.g. EVE and complaining about a not player driven economy... uhm. That's something that is not wanted in ED. The Devs don't want to give players that much power over the galaxy and that is a good thing.
It wouldn't make much sense actually if you think about it. Because how many (NPC) people live in one system?... sometimes lots of billions. Why should you as a single person (or even a guild of 50) have any chance of running that system realistically?! Or running the economy? Or own and run a 8km long and 4km wide spaceport worth hundreds of billions of credits?

In ED you are not the hero. Acutally you are a nomad, a stranger, a mercenary killing for money. Doesn't sound like a nice person, does it? They won't give you the keys to a space station or planet... ever.

That would be the lore explanation mostly. ;)

Edit:
Remember that this is not an MMO in the sense of "I'm building an empire with my guild and we will rule the galaxy". The MMO aspect of ED is that you are a small light in a huge persistant galaxy trying to make your way and the possibility to meet other players doing the same.

Players are shaping that world to a certain degree by doing things noticeable by the devs and participating in community goals and by their reaction to some things that happen in the storyline. (yes, devs know if you were trying to shoot that thargoid scout ship)

Uh, there *are* player shared missions. When you wing up your mission boards sync up and you can take into the same missions to the same systems. The only thing that changes is the amount and the payout as that depends on your personal rep with the faction and your rank.

There *is* a player driven economy. The players affect system status, trading, stocks and prices, regardless of which mode they're in.

And there's plenty of people you can meet with.

So ynow, don't talk out your butt.
