Mining Question, what am I doing wrong?
I was told mining is a great way to make money. So looked up some guides.
I found Hotspots for Void Opals and Monazite. Spent 30 Limpets for void opals, found nothing.
40 Limpets for Monazite, found nothing.
What am I doing wrong? The minerals in the hotspots just aren't there.
There's no way mining can come close to bounty hunting for making money this way.

Those guides are likely outdated. The current optimum way to earn money in mining is to go to HazRes sites in a ring with platinum.

As you were trying to mine Void Opals and since you didn't mention it, did you have a pulse wave analyser? For core mining you don't fire limpets at anything other than intensely yellow rocks that show in the analyser.

Edit: That's not to say you cannot make reasonable amounts in other ways with other minerals.

Try different hot spots. Some spots have practically no void opals while others have an abundance.

Ehh, I'm using an ordinary Mining Laser. How do I know what's a core mineral and what not?
I will try going for platium instead.

It just seems very time compared to jumping to the next RES and hunt pirates

do yourself a favour...
go to omicron capricorni b planet b1, mine platinum. you can sell it in system for $250k a tonne.... usually there is a carrier marked with "morpheus" there that always has a buy offer up for $250k or $240k (sometimes both).
there is a platinum hotspot overlap there, two that converge. people will tell you that dont make a difference but it does.... and i can tell you that from experience. hundreds of hours of experience.
dont bother with cores, you can fill up fast in OCB with platinum just laser mining.... system is pretty secure too, ive had friends attacked by pirates there but system authority vessels always intervened before they died... still wouldnt recommend entering one with cargo beyond limpets.
i get about 700 tonnes every 3 or 4 hours, depending on how focused i am.

if you are looking for more useful information, you are welcome to join my squadron Raxxla Seekers Society (RXSS) in game. we have a discord and quite a knowledge base to help you out in whatever way you need.
bring a surface scanner and hit the ring with one once you get to b1, you will see the platinum hotspots (they will turn orange for most from a distance, but not close enough to be usable...) marked on your nav panel, and outside... what i do is try and get equidistant from the two that are close to each other and drop down right between them.... then i set the farthest one as my "waypoint" (target it for reference) and head in that direction consistently.
in this area i will not bother with a roid that has less than 40% platinum. all other minerals go on my ignore list. you will find lots of 40-50% roids there, and 60+ as well! if you are not, simply relog and try again. resetting the instance works well.

I just want to point out that all advices tend to be on 'how to make money fastest using mining' kind of note. It's fine if you do that, but you can have fun doing core mining. At least do it once properly and see if you fancy it. It's part of the same game and telling the person to not bother with it is kinda....

Laser mining for platinum is where the money is in mining. After a small amount of practice, you should be able to crack 100 mil/hr using a Python. A Cutter with fleet carrier can get you up to 200 mil per hr.

If you know what you're doing, you can reach around 100mil per hr with monzanite cores or similar, but platinum is much more consistent. To get the highest rates, you need to be aware of where all the good spots are, then check the market for the good prices and choose a spot that's relatively close to a the selling point, so that you can get back to mining as quick as possible.

if you say what ships and engineering you have, i can tell you more details about how to get the most money.

Here's a video of me going past 100 mil per hr mining platinum. You see me stop at a station to refuel before and after mining, which wasn't necessary because I had easily enough fuel to complete the round trip without it. Without that, each trip would have been about 20% shorter in time, so I could have earned around 140 mil per hr in that session, which is more like what i normally get.

Deep core mining is one of the most satisfying thing to do imo in the game, cracking asteroids like nuts and loot, i love that !

That's about 58 mil per hr. You could be getting double that if you copied what I did in the video above that just takes a small amount of homework before you start. Ask if you want an explanation.

Edit: This should be a reasonable guide to core mining.

https://www.edtutorials.com/mining/smokes-guide-to-core-mining/

Only thing I would say that might not be current is the bit about the black roids in the scanner for 4.0 / Odyssey. Reports I have seen suggest everything that shows yellow in the scanner has a core now. I haven't been core mining since...well probably around 2019 /2020 but the prinicples remain and it covers the equipment you need.

everyone goes mining , if you goto a station in Boom
get your rep up till 100% with all
the money you can earn will benefit you on the long run this is how the game should be played.

tip : if you are mining make sure you trade with a station so your Trade rep goes up.
If you trade with a FC your trade rep will remain the same. making it harder to get elite status

having elite in one of the ranks will give you access to jamersons memorial

Pro-tip when mining, use a site like EDDB.io or Inara to find the highest sale prices in a system a decent amount of demand. Then search for a hotspot in the appropriate ring system as close as possible (also make sure they have the appropiate landing pad, etc.) Someone else suggested just doing platinum mining, which is fine, but Core mining is also a fun challenge and some of the minerals can sell for up to several hundred-thousands, and occasionally people are buying them at their fleet carriers for 800K to 1.5M each.

The price of the commodity has no relevance. If you're mining for money it's the earnings rate that's important, which is given by the tons mined per hour times the price per ton. Using that formula laser mining gives the most, and it's more entertaining and less repetitive when you can fill up a Python in 10 minutes rather than the hour it takes from mining cores.

Holy hell I did what you said and went for overlapping Platinum, I'm rich!

Thank's that helped a lot.
