Also sometime the route plotter misses a star or two, and replotting in the middle of the travel can make it shorter (or longer).
Even if you include booster stars, it still prefers straight path rather than diverting you off-path just so you can FSD boost.
It is entirely possible that there are no more white dwarfs or neutron star classes near the planned route.
The planner is also not perfect and unfortunately you can't make your own pre-planned route for reasons i guess.
When i go into a system i use my discovery scanner and it tells me how many bodies there are. I go into a system with only one star and nothing else and it says i have 11 bodies or 7 or whatever and i look on the system map and the side panel and nothing is there but the 1 body
