are you targeting it?
pyr0kid Oct 8, 2016 @ 2:09pm
yes. ive been asking all over and thats the only damn thing people have to say...

Make sure that you're at the right angle and that you're actually hitting the red box. Also, I think projectile weapons damage the internals more, so lasers aren't that good for targeting and destroying subsystems. What kind of ship do you have? What types of ships are you targeting?

a vulture and anything that isnt a sidewinder or viper

Can you see the health of the power plant going down at all? Or is it always at 100%?

lol I remember when i had trouble too... you just need to practice your piloting using flight assist on/off and manuvering thrusters as well as pip managment and throttle control. I once thought it was impossable but it gets easier. just keep the target within 300m and use up/down thrust to "strafe" while firing. the tricky part is finding the sweet spot where the npc wont dart away but also cant keep up with your momentum :) the power plant is always on the lower side "belly" of the target although I believe some take damage from the top too :)

Well, It's probably like Wolf said, then.

yeah, you cant hit the power plant from the front of your target with conventional weapons :)

You can't be hitting it then

Some ships its harder to hit than others because they move quite fast too.

Others it's pointless because their hull is so weak you'll kill them before it pops usually anyway.

I've killed plenty of ships after crippling them with more than 50% hull left

Though it has been a while.... conda just doesn't have the moves to stay in the sweet spot lol

Your OP was vague, which is why my now somehow now deleted post asked if you cycled targets to hit it
BorisNotRussian Oct 8, 2016 @ 2:51pm
things i figured out on my own to do this is.
1. find the side the red square is closest on the enemy ship (so you dont fire through the entire length of a ship to hit your target)
2. power plant is an internal system, so you need hull-breaching projectiles (look in the outfitting for that stat.)
3. Thrusters beeing an external system, are easier to damage and an immobile target is an easy target. maybe do that first. and than go ham on the plant..
i am not much of a fighter but these thing made myself much more survivable.

Hey OP, don't worry, it just takes practice. Just because you have the PP targeted doesn't actually mean you're hitting--every ship has a "sweet spot" where you can just wail away on the PP and take it down quick, but the trick is you have to carefully observe these ships and the damage you cause them before it starts clicking. If the ship has the sweet spot turned away from you, even though you see the target box you're still only drilling the hull.

The powerplants on each ship are at different positions e.g. on the Cobra Mk III it is at the rear right of the ship; on the Anaconda it is on the underside. To get a direct hit you have to be in the right position and have a clear shot of the powerplant, e.g. if you are facing the top side of the Anaconda then you will not hit the powerplant, but you'll still do overall damage to the shields/hull.

The only exception are fixed railguns as then can hit modules from the other side of the ship, but you need to be very accurate: https://youtu.be/bLNWGm-lD8w?t=13m37s
Plasmas can also damage modules without a direct hit, as when it hits the ship it damages a wider area.
There are probably engineered weapons now that may do more damage to modules even without a direct hit, but I'm on Mac so no Engineers.

Yes. Basically physical damage do good against physical objects, energy (thermal) damage do good against energy (shield).
