The Slider increase the Field of View.. I don't know how else to explain it other than you can see more around you as it pulls the camera viewpoint back.
The default Field of View is pretty low and human FoV is nothing close to what we see in-game.
Right increase the FoV, left decreases it and thus limits your view. Always increase when in doubt.
I kept the MSI 1080 Seahawk X though.

I have mine set to 72 FOV (max in game is 60) & the stereofocal distance (fish-eye effect) set at 28 which gives a much better viewing area :)
Bear in mind that the stereofocal distance has to be changed too or the fish-eye effect is terrible - I've found so far that a 4:1 ratio is a good range - ie; for every x4 count of FOV you up it by it's x1 count up for the stereofocal distance.
Frontier are ok with this & do allow you to make changes without consequence (ie; it doesn't count as a 'cheat' within the game)
Hope that helps :)
